hello,

im on cable and i have what iver heard is the default ip for windows(192.168.100.11)
and ive tried all i can with tech support from my isp. i cant renew it in "winipcfg", i just get the same ip. ive unplugged the cat 5 to the nic, reversed the connections, rebooted several times and nothing seems to work. is there a way to manually remove it in the registry maybe?? im baffled and if someone could help, i wouldnt be on the crappy phone line right now!!!!!!! thanx

That IP address is assigned from your ISP (DHCP Server), your stuff with it until the server re-issues you a new one.

i've had the same exact thing happen. twice and it was two different things.
first time i was using a 10/100 card with my cable modem. i had to turn the nic to only do 10mbps and then i was able to renew the address. the other time i had to go to microsofts knowledge base and completely delete the winsock.dll and wsock32.dll and wsock32.vxd file and restart. windows then rebuilds the drivers. make sure you check the knowledge base though because they will describe it in detail.

If its not what Gargomel7 said, then make sure your network cable connection is good. Look for lights that should be on if the cable is detected (NIC and cable/DSL modem).

do you see all o.0.0.0 's when you release all? There is no default windows ip address assigned. If anything you are not getting a ip from the cable provider. what are your network settings in the network properties page set to. make the nic be set to dhcp, make sure that wins is get from dhcp, make sure your workgroup and your identification is the same as what your cable company gave you.

chachdogg, actually Windows does put in a default IP address if it can't get one from a DHCP server. Different versions have different default ranges too.

see http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q220/8/74.ASP?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=default%20ip%20address&rnk=4&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98 for some more information.

ok guys/girls(if applicable) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
problem solved. duh. i never used my gay green disc you get from the cable company(when i got my newer modem) to set up an account because i already had one. bad move. when you use the disc it actually registers the mac address of the modem. soooooooo, they shut my service off since its been a month, and i really never registered it!! (how friggin redundant is this reply??) anyhow, it took tech support a while to figure this one out and i was totally dumbfounded...thanx for the ideas though.......mucho
