Your first upgrade to this system - if it will take it (810 or 820 series intel chipset )- is to replace the SDRAM with RDRAM - your SDRAM clock speed is only 133 - whereas the RDRAM can run as high as 800mhz clock speed.....

It's much more expensive RAM - but it does make a difference.

Next - that hard drive - what's the speed on that and what cache is it running?

If it isn't a 7200 with at least 2 MB of RAM onboard - you might think about trading it for something faster - even smaller....

You might also look at getting a SCSI card - or a PROMISE IDE card - 3 hot swap drive bays and three fast drives - then set your hard drive array up for RAID 5 so you never have to worry about back-up tapes or hard drive failures. This will also increase your speed.

Next - if you are somewhat PC literate and know how to keep a system clean from a software point of view - turn off almost all of the automated WINME house-keeping functions to free up that processor for your stuff.

next - add a case fan to keep that CPU cooler -

next - make sure that the CPU heat sink has a micro-thin layer of therma-plast in there to better conduct heat from the processor to the heat sink. careful not to void your warranty here.

next - you can open the case and make sure none of the power and ribbon cables obstruct the air-flow through the case - buying a small number of cable ties can extend the life of a system. Ribbon cables don't have to be kept flat - you can bunch them up or "round" them as long as you don't break the cable.

Next - tell us what your motherboard is on that thing - then we could possibly offer you some other tweaks -

Otherwise - keep an eye out for winME service packs on-line and look for driver updates.

if you bought it new and are having problems right off the bat as in your buggy comment then return it and get a replacement....if a new system has problems from the beginning then it will always have problems....if you can get your money back you can have a bigger and better machine built for the same amount of money and there are a few here that will be glad to help you out...a p3 should scream not whisper

Hi,
I recently took my computing experience to another level and bought a new system that looks something like this.....
pentium III 1000mhz
256 SDRAM
40 GB Quantum Fireball Hard drive
Soundblaster live!
32mb ATI RADEON graphics

I am running it on Windows ME (and so far not impressed!) http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif

....Are there any helpful tips, tricks or tweaks that i would benefit knowing about as so far i'm finding Windows ME a bit 'buggy' and given it's new and given it's microsoft there must be a few teething problems.
Maybe you have the same sort of spec as i have and can advise me on things i can do to optimize the system so i can feel the benefits of it.Don't get me wrong it's fast but i'm sure i can get faster!
I have done a fair bit myself but i'm sure there's much more to learn http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

I have downloaded a patch that came with my system cd,a patch associated with a shutdown problem dedected in windows ME.....this seems to have solved the prob.....lucky i decided to explore the cd cause i found lot's of ap's that helped me set up the system how it should be!!!
Right now i have no PROBLEMS with the thing...it flies!Online gaming is superb now and everythings cool but i just thought there may be some things i could of mucked around with to inhance it.(solutions still welcome)
I s'pose this all comes down to the fact that for 5 years i've kept with DELL,owning some superb and extremely stable systems, last one being a 500mhz dimension.
BUT...i went with GATEWAY this time given the fact that i use one at work and it's cool and also getting a 25% discount through a friend helped.I went for a 1000mhz performance with all the trimmings....i'm hoping i bought a reliable pc as i plan to keep this one for a few years.Even though i use it literally for playing around on do you still recommend upgrading now?
Your views,suggestions,comments and tips are widely appreciated.......... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You know what i think .

.....................Win Me blows , go back to Win 98se . its better for gaming.

Plus all NEW OS will have bugs and it will need patches and updates . I'd wait till them **** patches comes from Microcrap. Or maybe Win ME SE. zzzzzz

RDRAM? ewh! wait for DDR SDRAM support. no need for parity, much much cheaper. best idea? trash why me and go back to 98. it's till the best non-nt version of windows.
