Prob 1:
Half of my bootups dont work: just a grey screen on my monitor (i here the fans working though) and half of my resets do the same, but these come with black screens, weird eh?
Prob 2:
I just installed WinME, the setup went just fine. The prob is everytime i close a program it gives me : "[the program i just closed] has done a ilegal opperation". It doesnt happen when i pres f4 or press exit via file. And Internet Explorer gives me a kernel32 fault.
I dont have a clue whats wrong, please help! THANKS!!!

Did you install a fresh copy of WinME, or did you UPGRADE to WinME from 95/98?
Do a fresh install if you can!
TD.

I didnt do a fresh install, and i dont want to format my hdd. And i cant run sfc.
And any ideas on my first prob? I had it before i installed WinME.
I forgot to say: !HAPPY NEWYEAR! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif (man, its hard typing this, burned my fingers...)
On your first problem: Any beeps when you start your PC? One short beep is normal, anything else is an error code. Is there anything you do that precedes this problem (i.e., run a certain program, tweak settings, etc), or is it random? Also, are you overclocking anything? If so, drop it back to default settings.
For your second problem: I don't use WinME, but why can't you run sfc?? As for the IE problem, try this: Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Information. Under the Tools Menu, click on Internet Explorer Repair Tool. Worked for me when I had the kernel32 error.
Good luck.
The first thing you might try is running your System File Checker. Go to Start, Run, and type sfc. Let it run and tell it to fix anything it might find. Best of luck!

No beebs, i hear only my fans running. I did no tweaking, changed settings, or overclocking yet. I dont know if its random, i think all of my first tryes to boot up result in grey screens and when i unplug my power cable and then boot up everything works. The reset blackscreens are totaly random though...
And i probebly know why i cant run sfc... Im using the Dutch version, it probebly has another name... Is that system information tool the same? Cause i can find that one, not the explorer repair tool though.

AlexV, give some more information... Is this an older computer, or fairly new? What cpu? Name brand or homebuilt? How much memory? What kind of video...integrated, AGP, or other?
I think, with regard to your first problem, that you have some kind of hardware glitch. The fix may be as simple as taking out your cards and memory and reinstalling them, to different slots when possible. A card or a memory stick may make poor contact in one slot or socket but work fine in another. And blow away any dust while you have your system all apart. Also, firmly press down any socketed chips you see on the motherboard...sometimes these work loose over time.
As you put it back together, try it first without all the non-essential cards...sound, modem, network, etc. Just the HD, memory and the video. If it boots okay like this, add back the other stuff one thing at a time and see what happens. If you find a bad part, replace it.
If the problem persists with just the hd, video and memory, you will have to find out if the video card or memory is bad. It could also be the motherboard.
My top suspect would be the video card.
As for problem #2, don't know, but don't rush to do a fresh install. Some sources recommend a format and fresh install as a cure-all for various WinMe setup problems, but others disagree. I upgraded from Win95 to WinMe about 3 weeks ago, and it turned out pretty well. (System locked up at shutdown at first, but a new driver for my Genius Netscroll mouse cured that problem.) I think Thud and JimG are putting you on the right track with their suggestion to use sfc. I would add that you should be sure you have enough memory (at least 64 megs for WinMe, more is better), and make sure you have plenty of free space on your hard drive (less than 10% free space can cause problems).

SFC ??? SFC ??? Cant find no stinking SFC ?
Did ya make this up.or are you running a different Windows ?

Um, FoolishDave,i just did all thos things as i just istalled a new motherboard processor and psu 3 weeks ago: Abit KT7, AMD Duron 800, 256mb RAM, Voodoo3 3000 AGP. I have already done left some parts out as my psu arived to late, so i tryed my old one. Any other ideas? Im probebly gona clear my hdd anyway, its messy (not at 90% though)
And ram, i realy cant find sfc. And i am running a different windows: WinME Dutch version... Is sfc short for something? Maybe if i type the whole prog it will work?
Alex:
I cant find SFC also.according to Thud it stands for System file checker ? SFC does nada in run for me says cant find program.
Im running winME ?? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif And i had the same problem you have,i didnt want to format and lose everything so i deleted windows and all sub directorys, and did a new install, used a startup disk with cd-rom support, now its working fine.

I hate to say it but I've heard a lot of people having probs with upgrading from Win 98. So I installed Win Me clean and had no problems at all except for installing my old ISA network card. I had to find new drivers for it. You may beat yourself up trying to fix this and then in the end reinstalling anyway. LOL
OK, maybe I screwed up. I know SFC is in in 98, and ME is a continuation on that line, so I thought ME had it, too. It is a pretty useful tool.
That's what I get for making assumptions, huh?! Sorry 'bout that.

Oops, looks like I will have to sign up for the bumbler's club, too...didn't realize that there is no "system file checker" in WinMe. I never went looking for it, since I didn't need it.
I knew that all that stuff I was suggesting was basic bonehead stuff, but I couldn't tell from your post what your situation was. I apologize if it seemed like I was talking down to you.
Did you in fact find that the problems continued even when you were down to only the hard drive and the video adapter?
One other "bonehead-type" suggestion...you say there are no beeps. Make sure your speaker is properly connected and that it works.
If you do reformat and reinstall, let us know if it helps.
I still think your "won't boot" problem is somehow a hardware thing. Sounds like it happens before Windows even starts to load...

LOL, the bumblers club helped me, great. Well ram, im gona try that, deleting windows and then reinstalling.
And yeah, foolishdave, that is a bonehead-type suggestion, everything works on the second bootup, including the system speaker.
And yeah, it happens before windows starts: I press on button, get grey screen, hear everything working, but i cant hear the hard disk reading, although i can hear it spinning, and no processing. Maybe i should up the voltage a bit?
