Like Dominus, I see I'm also classed as a Senior Member! Now that makes me feel really old. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I see I joined way back on February 1st. I've been here so long I can even remember when CMonster was a new member. He was just a fresh-faced kid then, barely out of short pants. 'Course he only had a pocket calculator back in those days - just pretended it was a computer. (Wanted to know if he could overclock it. We had to humor him.) Ahh, those were the days!

Socalgal was just a skinny little kid out of high school then. I remember her pigtails kept getting caught in the floppy drive - she was always asking us how to get her hair out of her machine. Was it under "Remove Programs" or simply "Eject"?

Dominus? He was barely a twinkle in his 12" black & white monitor. Saving up for a few more letters so he'd have a complete keyboard, as I recall. Elf & Magic 8-Ball's spaceship was still out in deepest cyberspace. Finally homed in on SysOpt as the nearest thing to their weird home planet - closest thing to extra-terrestrial.

Bill Gates still thought windows were just gaping cavities put in the side of a building so he could watch what was going on inside (hmmm, maybe he still does).

Gosh, it's been a long time. Think I'll get my cane and stagger down the road for my pension, that is if I can remember where the road is after all these years. Must get some more RAM. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

I like senior members but will it be legal to talk to the junior member? Don't want to get arrested for dealing with a minor. All they have to say is I gave them bad advice and BAMM! I am in jail with other Geriatric SYSOPT members trading dentures.

Kidding, I like Senior Member rankings very much.

But maybe we should consider giving the senior member staus to those who have posts over 200 or so. This way we could identify those who have been around and who have some......credibility. I dunno, just a thought. Not to say other people do not have credibility but I think the senior people deserve some recognition.

Junior member: 1-50 posts
Member (thats me): 50-200 posts
Senior Member (like Dominus): 200 and beyond

Could that be done??

By the way, Just read Lost1 post, good idea.

I personaly don't think a person should be judged on his\her status by the number of posts that they forward. Why should someone be givin member or senior status after being here say just a week.I personally have been a member here since 03-04-99 (correct me if I'm wrong).I personally don't have time to post every day as I have a very busy lifestyle what with three boys a wife and the same old morgage and cars routine and of course work .I assure you if I could I would.I personally visite this forum at least once a day, because I am scared if I don't I will miss something.

Death To Mel

I do not agree with you because someone could join up and not use there account for a year and when they come back they automatically are at a high standing. People do not even know what this person is like. Therefore the more posts a person has, the more people can tell what he/she is like thus being ranked by number of posts in best.

Death To Mel:I can understand where your coming from( regarding not posting in a year) but that is not the way I intended it to be taken. If someone only posted a couple of times in a year then they should not be givin higher status, only if they particapate on a regular basis .

I think anyone who can give you their old username from the old BBS should be a senior member and Once a quarter nominate members for senior status and vote on them by the existing senior members..

jman01pa
12-06-1999, 04:12 PM
I vote for Senior Status. We can all look at the profile and see there posts but a quick glance at their member type is an easy thing to do. I believe it should be solely based on posts. If you cant post more than once or twice a year then your participation is minimal and should not qualify for veteran member status. The general member should be raised to at least 50 or even higher and the senior should be up over 500. Of course these are only my thoughts.

J http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

DavidX

How about Presidential Member status (oh okay, Senior Member status http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif ) at 360 posts - which, by pure coincidence, just happens to be my own number of posts? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

BTW, I totally agree that member status (if we need such a thing) should be based on the number of posts (i.e. amount of participation), not on how long you've been a member. It would ideally be nice to also take the quality and helpfulness of posts into consideration (a member shouldn't be made "Senior" just because he posts a lot in "Steals & Deals", for instance) but that's not really feasible.

DavidX, even though I agree with you about helpfullness and overall quality of posts, who the heck is going to sort through every post in every thread on the BB? I really don't think socalgal wants to add that to her job description http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
-felix

PS. obvviously a new standard has been established already because I've now noticed that some of us are members and others like AuraEdge and Mntsnow (who have about a billion posts each) are senior members. Anybody want to tell us what the official standards are now?

Like I've said. I'm just proud to be here and have the opportunity to commune . Being equal
no matter where we are , where we've been or where we're going, is , to me, the most compelling feature of the Sysopt's BBS. If you can make it for diner tonight but get caught up in your life and can't come back for six months , thats OK, your still welcomed. This is a unique and ,to me, a hallowed place.A million miles away from your "real" life. A haven to recharge your batteries and share your accomplishments and
tradgedies ( computer wise) and offer and receive help. You can't get this on the street. And sometimes not even from your "real" friends. But , I've yet to see someone refused assistance or a kind word or a humorous rebuttal here. I'm satified being a regular ole member and I hope we can all continue thru the next millenium ( which really doesn't start for 1 year and 25 days)

The Pickel

Socalgal: I hope you don't think I raised to much h-ll on your "Email" post. But that's just how I feel. I know I can't make everything right as far as the computer underworld guys, but I just want them to know that I and folks like me aren't gonna
take any more BS than we have to. Maybe someday if ever I become proficient enough
with this computer I can stop them in their tracks and shut them down. Not likely but I'm
letting them know :I may not be behind but I'm on their trail!!!

Again I wish every member and their families
would take a minute tommorow to reflect on the solemnity of the day and remember those who gave so much so we could be here. FREE
and Self determined. pickel

i agree with socalgal's setup to get to senior status. I myself have 240 posts since early october and while that says i am quite a regular here, I feel that I have a lot to learn and thus I also feel that I am not quite senior material yet. senior status should be something that one has to work for to attain. how about 700 or more posts makes a senior?? make it a goal that takes a while to get to....

well guys don't feel to bad cause a buddy of mine sent me this e-mail the other day and it made me feel like I'm getting old and I'm only 23!

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things.

Each year the staff at Beloit College in Wisconsin puts together a list to try to give the faculty a sense of the mindset of that year's incoming freshmen. Here is this year's list:

> > The people who are starting college this fall across the nation were born in 1980.

> > They have no meaningful recollection of the Reagan Era and probably did not know he had ever been shot.

> > They were prepubescent when the Persian Gulf War was waged.

> > Black Monday 1987 is as significant to them as the Great Depression.

> > There has been only one Pope.

> > They were 11 when the Soviet Union broke apart and do not remember the Cold War.

> > They have never feared a nuclear war.

> > They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.

> > Tianamen Square means nothing to them.

> > Their lifetime has always included AIDS.

> > Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic.

> > Atari predates them, as do vinyl albums.

> > The expression "you sound like a broken record" means nothing to them.

> > They have never owned a record player.

> > They have likely never played Pac Man and have never heard of Pong.

> > They may have never heard of an 8-track.

> > The Compact Disc was introduced when they were 1 year old.

> > As far as they know, stamps have always cost about 33 cents.

> > They have always had an answering machine.

> > Most have never seen a TV set with only 13 channels, nor have they seen a black-and-white TV.

> > They have always had cable.

> > There has always been VCR's, but they have no idea what BETA is.

> > They cannot fathom not having a remote control.

> > They were born the year that Walkmen were introduced by Sony.

> > Roller-skating has always meant inline for them.

> > Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show.

> > They have no idea when or why Jordache jeans were cool.

> > Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave.

> > They have never seen Larry Bird play.

> > They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.

> > The Vietnam War is as ancient history to them as WWI, WWII and the Civil War.

> > They have no idea that Americans were everheld hostage in Iran.

> > They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are.

> > They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.

> > They never heard: "Where's the beef ", "I'd walk a mile for a Camel", or
"de plane, de plane!"

> > They do not care who shot J.R. and have no idea who J.R. is.

> > That the Titanic was found. They thought we always knew where it was.

> > Michael Jackson has always been white.

> > Kansas, Chicago, Boston, America, and Alabama are places, not groups.

> > McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.

> > There has always been MTV.

> > They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.

> > Do you feel old yet?

Scott,

I agree with the three-tiered system. Being a relatively new member, a little over thirty days with a hundred plus posts, it somehow feels fundamentally wrong to be given the title of Senior.

The title should be reserved for those who’ve put in time and a great deal of effort to participate within the various forums of SysOpt.com BBS. Hence my vote is for a minimum three-tiered system with perhaps a fourth tier, recognizing the extraordinary achievement of one thousand posts or more.

Regards to All,

Zotz Mein

Back to topic, the status seems fine at those limits suggested. Anything else tends to get subjective - as long as everyone knows what it means, that's cool.
