I have a cold boot problem with a new system
I just built. The system has a Tyan S2056ag4
Tomcat motherboard (i810e), Celeron 300 slot1
processor (no secondary cache), 64mb 100mhz
Kingston Valueram sdram, InWin V500 Chassis
mATX 145 watt power supply, Fujitsu 10.2gb
hard drive, Memorex 48x CD, & Floppy.

The Problem only happens half the time I do
a cold boot. The power supply comes on (I
checked it with a meter, 12v,5v,3.3v,-12v,
-5v,Power Good,+5v Standby,Ground). CPU fan
turns. Power supply fan turns. Chasis power
LED lights. Hard drive & CD drive LEDs flicker. ---But, I get no POST.--- No video.

If I press the reset switch, the system goes
ahead and BOOTs and runs perfectly. The processor worked fine in my Diamond 440bx
motherboard. I have RMA'ed the motherboard
for an identical replacement, but, no luck.

The system has no PCI cards installed (Audio and Video are built onto the motherboard).
I have reduced the system to a barebones
configuration (motherboard, power supply,
memory, & CPU) and still get the cold boot
problem half the time I turn the thing on.

I even tried just the motherboard, powersupply, CPU, and no memory installed.
Half the time I get beep codes indicating
no memory installed, and half the time I
get no beeps (cold boot problem).

Does anyone have another idea?

Probably the power switch. My sceond pc does this all the time. I have to press and hold the switch to get it to go.

I checked out the chassis front panel power
on switch today. Checks o.k. 0 ohms when
pressed, infinity when released. Could it
be that my processor just doesn't want to
start all the time? It worked fine when I
retired it from my 440bx board. I use a
e.s.d. wrist strap and pad whenever I open
the case on a system.
