I would like to run the Windows 2000 setup from my hard drive and install it on a 5GB partition. I want the Win2000 partition to be formatted NTFS. How do I do this?

Thanks!

On the w2k cd, there is a directory called makeboot. in that dir is a utility called Makeboot. running this wll make 4 disk, ( make sure you have 4 formated disk ) that will allow you to startup w2k for a install to your 5gb hard drive. hope this helps.

You could just copy the CD to your HDD and run setup.exe which will be one of the files transfered off the disk. During the setup choose, new clean setup, then when prompted for a partition to install on,choose the letter for your 5G ,when prompted say yes to NFTS.

I tried the boot disks. When boot from those, it starts windows setup, goes through some stuff, then prompts me for the windows 2000 cd to conitnue setup. I don't want it to use the cd, I want it to use my hard drive. If I try to run setup.exe from a dos prompt, it tells me I can't run it from dos. If I run winnt.exe from the dos prompt, it won't let me select to format my partition NTFS. Any other way to do what I want to do?

Hi...

Is there an OS on your machine now? If so, run setup from your HD (while in Windows) and choose NOT to upgrade. Then when prompted for type of setup, choose advanced and install to seperate partition. This should work as I've done it before. Good Luck http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

copy the contents of the i386 folder to the hd in a folder and run the winnt.exe file.
U can use a Win98 boot disk to this from dos. It does ask about NTFS conversion during install.
DONE

I don't know about 2k, but in NT4 I believe you had to run winnt /b to install from a DOS partition. I have a bootable 2k CD so I never looked into installing from the HD.
