Win98 changes the way you boot to a DOS prompt. Hold down
the Ctrl key while your PC is booting. This takes you
directly to the Boot Menu, including Safe Mode and "Boot to
command prompt only."

What's the difference? It's just another way of bringing up the menu.

I'm such a geek, even though I don't use it much anymore, my machine stills goes to a DOS start up menu made via the menu options from autoexec.bat/config.sys.

I have like 8 choices, Win98 & 7 different configurations of DOS (clean boot, w/memory managers, without, w/CDROM, without, etc.) But 99.5% of the time I just go to Win98. I've finally lowered my default timeout from 60 seconds to 3 seconds.

I like that configuration/choice idea. Since I always boot into my Boot Menu (TweakUI), it's good to be reminded about F8.

I've lost my mouse before and could'nt remember the keyboard shourtcuts so for those that have lost them also here are the only ones I remember..alot of people dont realise just why M$ put the win key on the keyboard...


Win key + E Opens an Explorer window
Win key + R Opens the Run dialog
Win key + Pause Opens System Properties
Win key + F Opens Find: All Files
Win key + Ctri + F Displays Find: Computer
Win key + M Minimizes all open windows
Win key + Shift + M An undo for Win key + M
Win key + D Toggle that minimizes or maximizes all open windows
Win key + Tab Cycles through program buttons on the taskbar
Win key + Fl Opens Windows help.

For those without a Winkey (or don't want to remember all those combos) here's a GREAT (IMHO) tip that I've found extremely[ useful over the years. And best of all, you've only got to remember one key combination: [CTRL]+[ESC]

Ya see, [CTRL]+[ESC] always brings up your Start Menu. Now the key to this tip is to name the shortcuts in your Start Menu with a number/letter prefix. Then you can just hit that number/letter and "ba-da-bing ba-da-bang" start that application.

As an example, to run Notepad I would just hit
ctrl+esc (which brings up the menu) then hit 2 (starts Notepad).

Simple to do and a great time saver once you get in the habit of using it.
