my laptop will not shut down when I click on the shut down button it reboots just like I would have hitten the reboot button. Does any one know where in the registry I can straighten this mess out any help will be appreciated. The only way I can shut down now is to restart in DOS mode then hit the power button.

Hi, I had exactly the same problem and then darelld gave me this solution and it worked.
Fast Shutdown registry key is enabled
The Microsoft System Configuration utility includes an option to disable Fast Shutdown. If this option is unchecked in Windows 98 Second Edition, your system may reboot instead of shutting down. To resolve this issue, change the FastReboot value data from 1 to 0 in the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Shutdown
NOTE: When you apply the Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Supplement, which addresses shutdown issues, the Disable Fast Shutdown option is no longer listed on the Advanced tab in Msconfig.

An easier way to do that earlier post!
Click Start / Run
Type "msconfig"
Click "Advanced" button
Check the "Fast Shutdown" box
Ok, now exit by clicking ok, and reboot. I`m pretty sure thats how you do it. Just checked under WinME and that option isn`t there, but I`m sure it was in Win98.
If it`s not there, it could be under:
Control Panel / System / Performance / File System / Trouble Shooting.
Good Luck!
TD.

I am having the same problem on an old IBM Pent166Mhz. When I press the power buttom, nothing happens, it clicks on and off but continues to stay on. I gave that pc to my little brother and he doesn't mind it.
