Now that was truely odd! (and scary!) I was restarting my computer after changeing some network bindings when a thick white smoke started gushing out of my case!!!!!!(no cover) I dove for the power button thinking out load "oh sh*t!!!!!" After looking around awhile for what smelt like burnt plastic to no avail....I decided to try to boot up again. Everything is fine...or seams to be thus far. I though maybe a cord got on something hot, though my heatsinks never get that hot. Hmm, well I'll keep looking.

I apology for this cheap shot. but, everything seem to be working on your systems. so I'll post it in fun only.
maybe it was one of these universial network cards. and it was just sending you out a smoke signal to let you know it was working. no pun intended. also you might want to check all your connections. and make sure they are all tightly together. one of them may be lose and just together enought to make contact. and it could cause a short out. in the future. keep a check on things for a few days and leave the cover off.

When I got my new case, I got everything on my old case to my new case. Only to discover one of the Power connectors on my old case has been partially burned. Only a little bit of the handle was melted. I knew it was recent because I usually open up my case. But I never noticed smoke coming from it. Try looking for small melt marks on the wires and connectors.

That's not good... in a few days strange and wondrous (NOT) things will begin to occur and you won't be able to figure it out..I had this happen to me.....If it happens to you this is what caused it...

OH NO!!!! But that will mean I'll have to upgrade...I mean "replace" stuff! Oh darn! haha http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I havn't a clue how this would cause this....but I forgot to mention I disconected my tv from my video card slightly before it happend (watched a movie). I did that right after I pushed the power button. It got to the windows splash screen before I noticed the smoke and turned it off.

I bet your speaker got a short to ground or someone knocked the wire off and reinstalled it into the wrong pins.

You think 5 volts could melt the soder connecting the wire to the speaker in about 10 seconds?

Change your power supply or get it checked out, if it was at start up it could be letting one hell of a big spike through, and your CPU won't like that aprt from any of the other bits and pieces in sys. better safe than sorry.

A guy a work had a speaker wire burn like that and he had to replace the whole inside of his pewter, it seems as he explained to his wife, that viruses from speker wirz will hide in the ground wire in the wall and infect the unit causen much needed repair,, (S)

Indeed, putting the 5Vdc supply across the speaker could do that. The voice coil wire of the speaker is finer than that of the fuse. I would have expected that to pop first. The fact that the black wire was the one that melted suggests that somehow a substantial current source got across it at the speaker end. The mobo end is essentially at ground. If the fault is no longer there, you can expect no further problems. Lucky, I hope.
