Ok, this is how I set up one of my typical email accounts in Outlook Express.

Correct Settings

(Incoming mail) pop3.netzero.net
(Outgoing mail) smtp.netzero.net

(Account name) hansolo
(Password) *******

This is under the account/email/properties tabs in Outlook.

After shutting Windows down and restarting, this is what is looks like.

Incorrect Garbage

(Incoming mail) localhost
(Outgoing mail) smtp.netzero.net

(Account name) hansolo/pop3.netzero.net
(Password) *******

It ALWAYS resets to this no matter how many times I change it back.

Now, this wouldn't be TOO much of a problem if it didn't occasionally foul up. Sometimes it will start to download a message and then freeze. Once it fouls up, it won't download any messages off that particular server and freezes at the same spot every time. The only way to get the messages is to manually change the settings BACK to the way I set them in the first place. Of course this lasts until I shut down Windows and restart which brings back the fouled up settings.

I have not been able to find ANY setting or option that will stop Outlook from doing this. Does anyone here have a clue how to stop Outlook from doing whatever it darn well feels like doing?

Try using detect and repair under the outlook help menu.

This is actually Outlook Express now. I figured there was no use in using Outlook as it required Express for newsgroups anyway so I just dumped it. However, the same thing is happening with Outlook Express.

it sounds to me like you have norton antivirus installed. it's email scanning function has a very annoying habit of causing the exact problem you describe.

well what happens is the antivirus programs tend to do more of a passive content scan in that they don't scan the email as it comes in, the mail is stored in a temporary location on your system and then scanned by the a/v software and then moved to the regular mail directory. apparently these programs alter your email settings to look on the 'localhost' to scan the temp location of the email as it comes in. this isn't good because it will cause functionality problems with your email software. that's my take on it, if anyone else has any input help me out here!

Thanks. That was and wasn't the problem. I'm not using Norton, but rather Pc-cillin. I decided to turn off the email scan and reset the settings. They stuck on a reboot. Finally. Any idea why these email virus programs change the settings though?
