I sent an email like you said and here is what i got back. I guess I wont be getting cable anytime soon. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

I am interested in your cable modem service, but the information on your
page seems vague to me. I would like to request some information that
clarifies the 3 gig bandwidth. Does that mean that if I were to download 4Gb
of data within a one month billing period that I'd be 1Gb over the limit?
And at $0.05 per Mb, that would add $50.00 to my bill for that month?
Thank you

Yes that is correct.

If you have any other questions please do not hesitate to call me at the Adams

Thanks

Wow! I was thinking that maybe I was wrong about that, which is why I suggested you e-mail them. That REALLY blows! I saw a message today on another BBS about how his cable co. only allow 1Gb of data per month! What's the use of even having cable if you can't d/l a bunch of ****?

What the hell's wrong with these cable companies?

And yes, I'll be happy to e-mail them.

Lets see-If you got a FAIR cable d/l connection @100KB/s,you would burn-up your 3GB limit in 8.3333.. hrs.
These guys are nuts.

I have @home cable and there is no limit for me. Friends and i set up FTPs to transfer stuff from one another, and we haven't heard a peep from them.

Now guys, tell me if this cable service from Shaw@Home in Canada is *fair*. Canadian dollars noted please...

Regular is $150 for setup
Christmas special is $25 bucks.
Per month unlimited use is charged @ $40
Comes with 5 emails and 25megs web space.
I keep the ethernet card and they keep the cable modem when I terminate the service.

Considering the fact that bandwith and performance depends on the number of users per node, do I get less bang for the buck as cable modem gets more popular?

Due to difference in standards of living in Canada and USA or elsewhere, please do not take into consideration currency conversions.

Planning on either getting a 2nd phone line for a one time set up fee of $85 and an extra $20 per month or just get cable modem connection.

Thanx.

I'd suggest going with cable over a 2nd phone for a dial-up account. The added phone bill and the ISP charge will be about the same as a monthly cable service charge. And even on it's slowest days cable is still WAY faster than any phone line.

Regarding your cable offer:
That's actually sounds very decent. Technically it's cheaper that what I pay (but like you say it's difficult to factor in living expenses for the areas). Sounds very similar to my cable setup, which was:

Regular setup fee $150(US)
-I signed on during a special offering & paid $0 setup fee & my 1st month is free.
-afterwhich it's $40/month.
-I also keep the NIC & return the modem whenever service is terminated.
-I get multiple e-mails (I think) but don't need them
-I only get 5 Mb web storage space which blows! I'm jealous of your 25Mb. My previous dial-up ISP spoiled me by giving me 30Mb for my site.
-My d/l speed is unlimited and seems to be averaging around 300k-350k/sec.
-Upload speed is limited to 128k.
-My ISP actually has a decent Usenet news server, which is a nice bonus. (Files from the newsgroups really hauls *** down that fat coaxal!)

I can assure you, you won't be sorry once you get cable.

DSL in Canada, all the way:

- Startup $25
- $45 /month ($39 with my phone package)
- 5 emails, 5MB web space (2GB bandwidth/month? methinks)
- Unlimited bandwidth personal use
- up to 750K/sec transfers (1.2Mbits/sec UP, 7.5Mbits/down)
- Behind a firewall (physically = protection)
- Typical transfers from good sites are between 100 - 325K/sec
- Bloody fast, no matter how many other users are on my node, unlike cable where you all share the bandwidth...

I know someone who has cable - he had an awesome connection until his neighbor got cable too and his bandwidth dropped in half! That sucks....
