my cousins pc has died, well the mouse anyway. I turned it on and the mouse had stopped responding! So i changed it for another one and still it didn't work, so i swapped the cable from the mobo to the case and still not working. I also tested the mouse and the cable on my pc and they worked fine. So i put the win98 boot disk in and booted the system, run the win98 setup cd to see if the mouse would be recognised and still nothing. as you have probably guessed its a serial mouse on com1, also tried com 2 and still nothing. Windows doesn,t detect it when trying to add new hardware!
So its not windows or anything is the motherboard broke?? I don't know what mobo it is all i can say is its a Socket 7 with 64mb ram and a K6/2 300Mhz cpu.

Any sugesstions??

Thanx - RobUK

I seem to recall once seeing a similar post with a response that there is a fuse for the mouse and keyboard.

Look in the area of those ports with a good light (& possibly a magnifying glass).

I hope it's this simple for you.

Are the com ports enabled in the bios?

1: you might try removing the com ports in the device manager and re-installing them
2: the keyboard circuit does have a component that acts as a fuse, I don't know about the com's
3: I had a similar problem once, got up one morning and my PS2 mouse was DOA. Re-installed Windows and everything was fine.
