Are there any necessary OS changes when installing a second chip or is it just a matter of inserting it in? Its a slot 1 pentium III. Thanks

Nope, you can't just add the 2nd CPU and expect NT4 to detect the new second processor automatically. You will need to reinstall NT4 with both processors for NT4 to change the hardware abstraction layer of NT to a multiprocessor HAL.

But there is a work around the method of not having to reinstall the OS by editing HAL = Hardware Abstraction Layer, but I'd recommmed you do a full clean install of NT4 with both processors in place for best results. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

If you really must avoid the method of doing a full-clean reinstall for second processor to be recognized by NT4, here is a method:

I don't think that Windows NT 4.0 supports dual processors.

Am I wrong?

VERY WRONG! Shame on you! LOL J/K http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/biggrin.gif

NT4 Workstation supports 2
NT4 Server Supports 4
HAL can be edited to use up to 32.

NT5 (Win2K Pro) supports 2
NT5 (Win2K Server) supports 2, or 4 if upgraded from NT Server 4
NT5 (Win2K Advanced Server) supports 8
NT5 (Win2K Data Center) supports 32
