An excellent article on the MS ruling.HERE (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/1999/11/30//ED101835.DTL&type=tech_article)
What do you think of it? Another case for the lawyers.HERE (http://www.informationweek.com/langaletter)

Rather well written. I believe a few facts are left out, but were covered a little too with an honorable mention. This is going to be interesting where all this is going to end up.

A rhetoric filled mess akin to G.H.Bush's presidential platform. There is no question of the fact that MS has propelled our society and made it possible for many to prosper both intellectually as well as financially. The issue is that of unfair pressures placed on those companies, both software and hardware based, to team with MS.
By this alliance the technology would be shared and optimized for use with MS and its
encompassed venders and subsidiaries.
If OEM's decided to resist MS's pressures then further steps would be taken by MS(well
documented and quoted by the Judge directly)
which would further isolate the OEM or product in question. This would ultimately restricted the company from fairly competing in the free and open economic arena.
Its a long way of saying;
MS went way beyond a sweet perk or two for friendly OEM's and potential alliances. If it
was with a type of software which was very specific in its application and only affect a relatively few users and or competitors then this would certainly be a different matter
with absolutely no impact on our present tech. boon. It is by no means a simple matter of liberal political side taking.
It has nothing what so ever to do with restriction of MS' ability to trade freely,
and it will not impact the consumer other than restoring some level of fairness with
regards to competition.
I see many of you talk about how well IE runs under windows and how many problems
there are with Netscape. Could this have anything to do with the fact that IE is optimized for windows? Does anyone here remember the security update fiasco with win98? Did anyone bother going to non ms supported sites to see what the hackers were saying about the security bugs? Maybe created by MS to allow a backdoor for whoever without the users knowledge?(this was supported by many and I only use this unsubstantiated charge for the purposes of probability)
Has anyone checked out what is happening with the latest AMD launch and MS's "men in
black" putting some very considerable pressure on mainboard oem's to refuse AMD applications.
(The amount of MS booked flights to Korea is staggering)
Folks Gates is a thug and misused his position to propel his technological manifesto. If this was about a typewriter or peripheral then it would not be discused by us or anyone else but kids its about the OS of the modern equivalent of the wheel. It has and will continue to shape our development
at rates which cant be measured even on a PIII. It is prudent thinking(for a change) that the justice department has chosen to send such a big statement to the worlds richest and most influential tycoon. Dont even start to think that you can force a free and open economy to prescribe to your specific applications in an effort to have one common system in every home and through the saturation of MS' operating system be able to write specific cryptic codes which have the potential for world wide technological extortion through directly
controlling the operating systems of 90% of the free worlds computers
What if gates or one of his minions goes funny in the head? If we all have his OS then he can control our systems and we would be powerless to stop the richest man with the
keys to everyone's computer driven life. Its imperative that this type of "bully boy" hyjinx be knocked in the head before a potential disaster arises which could put back the growth of our technology driven world and not withstanding cause damage to our very world dominating economic situation.
Just my feelings not meant to be a manifesto of my own and no I dont work for Netscape.
I have struggled with recent success to have both browsers working effectively alongside
one another and have learned the necessary fixes to disable some of MS bs and some of
Netscape's bs. Yes they both write malicious code in an attempt to make us choose one
over another because of conflicts in areas which have no reason to cause conflict. Think
about that next time you look at a specific video card or software program. Would things
be more affordable, with many more options and in a non specific format if it were not
made specific purely for the economic benefit of Bill Gates?
