Install script

Hi,
I don't know in which forum I should post my questions, so please bear with me if this the wrong place to post them.
Is it possible to write a script that can automate installation process? Say, someone wants to build a system, with graphic card X with driver Y, add sound card P with driver Q and game controller R with driver T, so on and so forth ...

How do the big guys such as Compaq or IBM do the installation and systems setup? If these scripts do exist, in what language they were coded?

Companies like Compaq that ship systems with identical configurations simply install the software on one drive, then mirror that drive to a zillions of other drives to install in all of the other identical systems. Not sure what they do when there is a configuration change, I would assume they do the same mirroring effort but allow the system to boot to recognize the different component(s).
