Web pages not opening

Using cable modem with win98nd.

Web pages are not opening(trying to open sysopt), working before, when I access Internet Explorer.Says in the system tray for internet explorere that is is "detecting proxy settings" and comes to the page asking if I want refresh or detect network settings.
Contacted tech support, says to refresh IP setting????????????
Any suggestions?

First, go to Tools->Internet Options->Connections->LAN Settings

Uncheck "Automatically detect settings". This is only to bypass detection. If your settings are wrong...

As for the tech support, do they want you to get new IP addresses? Go to Start->Run->type winipcfg

Drop down to your net card (not PPP). Realease all and renew all. I hope this is what they wanted you to do.

Has anyone used the tracert function in a pc to detect the network settings?
