Hello,I have a compaq 5440 with a AMD K62 450,with a giga byte 5A-SMM mobo, what I want to do is change motherboards. If I change the old board ,put in a new board for a athlon or duron can I just hook up the drives and hard drive ,and just boot up or what do I have to do to get my compaq in shape to change to a duron mobo and cpu?thanks

As long as you've taken care of disconnecting or rearranging the external parts of on-board components, you should be able to replace the motherboard if you like.

Hard Drives, CD-Rom Drives, etc. will all plug into the IDE chain well. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Ummm, it depends on how proprietary Compaq made it. The floppy, cd-rom, hard drives should be ok, but some manufacturers have added extra wires from the power supply to the motherboard, etc.
Oops, I missed the gigabyte board mention before. That should be ok.
Make sure it's an atx power supply, one 20-pin plug, power switch goes to the motherboard, not straight to the power supply. Athlons (including the Duron) prefer a 300 watt power supply. Many 250's will do, but if there's any problems a non-approved power supply is the first thing to look at.
