LOL! The "news" media.

I'm sorry, but I just think it's so silly that they even attempt to give us the "scoop" on a virus. Why this one in particular? What about the one created yesterday by some punk wannabe geek in the suburbs of New Jersey? Or why not the one created the day before that by some disgruntled as/400 programmer in Seattle?

The media doesn't seem to quite understand the situation. The is a new virus created EVERY SINGLE DAY. There are thousands upon thousands of them out there right now, and many more thousands will be created in the years to come.

IM(not so)HO, the media is not doing us any favors by reporting on one single virus 3 or 4 times a year. Good for a chuckle though.

And I certainly mean no offense Gene. I understand you are just passing on what you think is useful information. I just don't see it as very useful. I mean, what's one more virus? Ok, now there's 865,432 of them. Tomorrow it'll be 865,434, or so. /forum/smile.gif

They tend to lag a little behind the dedicated anti-virus companies, but www.cert.org (http://www.cert.org)
provides excellent information on virii, worms and perhaps most importantly, software (OS) vulnerabilities, including Linux and SGI stuff, not just MS.
Read a couple of pages and you'll never go online again :-= (they really should put that one into UBB)

Thanks for the alert Gene C,

correct you are OuTpaTienT. I get virus's all the time. I go places where noone goes. and I know I stand the chance of getting them. friends at the site have told me to watch myself. I just got me a trojun on thanksgiving day. I got it zipped up if you want it. I also got a boot virus. that can get past mcfee and norton. on a floppie. It will wipe out you whole harddrive. I lost a 13.1 with almost 11 yrs. of my company backups, software, records, ect. don't get me wrong and I would never use them. but, if you want I can send you a secret e-mail with the boot virus in it. and you can. after you format and redo you whole drive because you can't even get to a c:\ or windows. and tell all of us how funny it was. I know you are just kidding. but, some of these virus cost large companys millions of dollars a year to fix. and than people cry about the riseing cost of products. so if you need something to laught about. let me know!!!and I did take your reply with about as much use as I do the virus I have stored away.lol

I seriously gotta wonder what you're doing to get viruses "all the time" Gene. In stark contrast, I've never had a virus. And what's more amazing, is I never run any anti-virus software. And I've been actively online since the good'ol days when we called local BBS's (before anyone knew what the Internet was). Over the past 8-9 years, it would not be an underestimate to say I've run anti-virus software maybe a dozen times.

Gee, it kinda sounds like I'm bragging huh? Not really. In fact my bad habits would fall into the catagory of "really stupid". But I'm one of these people that learn through experience (even if I know better), and I haven't yet had the experience of being bitten by a virus.

BTW, yes I've been tremendously lucky, but it's not ALL luck. You gotta be smart about what you d/l, who/where you d/l from, and what you execute on your system.

Cert is a great site for security/virus info - I've been visiting it for awhile. And although I'm not as brave as you, OutPatient, I do agree one must be very careful as to d/l's, sites visited, files on floppies and what's opened via email attachments. Conversely, I update my NAV no less than every 2 days, run F-Prot regularly and have AVP for triple checking. The only virus I ever picked up in 3 years was a Word macro virus I transported home from work on a floppy! (knock wood)

"OUCH" that hurt. now I got a headack. I go to alot of the undergroung sites. that's where the good stuff is. and I spend alot of time in third world countries. that have the best and some of the oldest software for older systems. they don't have the money like we do. but, they sure do. have the know how. and the underground has the most virus and the third worlds come in second. but, if you want to travel. you got to take the chance.

i find it curious that people spend the time creating virii such as that. A friend of mine designed a bios virus, just to see if he could do it, but that is something different. Creating virii are just so boring to make. I give credit to the guys who created the AT&T ad MCI viruses. Those are the ones that do nothing but remind how much money you could be saving with the other, none harmful and humorous. too many teenage aol user(nothing towards teens, i am one) think they are almighty powerful by using VB 6.0 and writing a program that simply deletes windows. oh well, people are just so simple. I am not condoning(sp?) any virus, i actually make them though. I make them and use them on old 486's. just to see what i could accomplish. now i am rambling, sorry.

Firstly thanks Gene C for posring info on Virus.
Secondly sure there new viruses every day, that why any info about new ones is use full, and as Gene sead there are viruses out there that can get past the best, so if you are online for long periods then your going to find them, and when they hit they can cost.
