Anyone else here delete the contents inside it on a regular basis?
Just curious. I do it at least once a week. I've never had any adverse effects from it either.
What about you all?

can you use task scheduler to run disk cleanup like once a day or something? this is assuming your running win98 /forum/smile.gif But that will let you clean out the temp files.

I do. I like a clean harddrive /forum/wink.gif
I have Maintenance-Disk CleanUp set for once a day to delete: Temp Internet, Temp Setup, Downloaded Program Files (doesn't delete installed entries), Old ScanDisk, Temp, and Win98 Setup Temp.
No adverse effects (that I know of...)

Hey Dood: I use the Norton Clean Sweep, fast and safe disc cleanup . Comes with Norton System Works. Well worth the bucks /forum/biggrin.gif

You could try what I do, add these two lines to the beginning of your autoexec.bat file exactly as stated:
@DelTree /Y C:\WINDOWS\Temp
@MD C:\WINDOWS\Temp
This prompts your system to delete then recreate the windows temp folder each time your reboot or startup your system. It's simple, but quite effective.

Can you safely delete the stuff under c:\windows\temp? I've got 155 MB in there.
Sure would like to get rid of it.
Looks like RobRich does it every day and if he does it by crackie I will too.
I've got Norton CS2000 and I can't see where it would clean windows\temp files.

I use Netscape with a shortcut to the cache on my desktop to delete and then another shortcut on the desktop to delete the trash bin....it takes a few seconds.

Reddog: Go into the settings for "Fast and Safe" clean up. There are 5 items. Put a check on "Temporary Files" and click OK.

CS2000 said I only had 2.5 MB in temporary files to delete. My c:\Windows\Temp folder has 155MB+ in it. Can I wipe it out? It's never been cleaned out(10mths). I guess I could save it to a cdrw,wipe and see what happens huh? /forum/biggrin.gif

Reddog,
just manually delete everything in that subdirectory. It's safe to do so provided that you haven't just finished installing something or just ran Windows Update during your current Windows session. If you have, reboot and then delete everything.

Used to have a Visioneer scanner that had a driver update to shut the lamp off. The relevance is that if I cleaned out C:\Windows\Temp\ I had to reinstall that darned driver update or the lamp would just stay on.
I would think that particular driver situation not to be unique although it's the only one I've encountered.

Robrich's method is effective, but I would NOT recommend it for everybody. I would do a manual delete of all the files on a periodic basis. It's a pain in the ****, but it's also the safest way.
The reason why you wouldn't want to do it that way with the autoexec.bat file, especially if you use a Norton product, is because sometime when updating virus definitions and/or installing certain applications, temporary data is stored in the c:\windows\temp directory and accessed upon soft reboot of the computer. If you have those lines in the autoexec.bat file, you will cause the process to bomb out or not install properly.
If you do decide to use the lines in the autoexec.bat file, be sure to REM them out before installing or updating any kind of application including Windows98 Update. Of course, sooner or later, you'll forget to do it and you're going to create more problems than it's worth. No one at work in our IT shop is permitted to use these lines in our autoexec.bat files with our workstations.
