Okay, here we go again: I have an ancient Digital Venturis FP 590. 4 isa, 2 pci. Won't boot with the new voodoos 3000 pci installed. Anyway, I got a USB controller card (pci) so I can use my external burner. Win98 finds it, then grabs the software to install. Then when the window comes up and the cab file is extracted, everything locks up tighter than a drum.
Any suggestions here?
Thanks in advance!

I believ ethe system reqs for most of those is a 133 pentium. That might be your problem. I will look it up to find out.
Dave
Nope they can handle it. 486 is base req. Sorry to doubt you. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/redface.gif
Are you using any ISA cards? Are the ISA and PCI slots shared possibly? Do you have an IRQ conflict? Does it boot ok without the burner attached?
In looking up some of the USB burners, their system reqs are P166 processor. That could be your problem if it is a problem only while the cd burner is trying to be installed. I gather though that your lockup is with the USB PCI card installation in whihc I would check the questions above.
Good luck

Hi Dave, and thanks. Let's see, the computer locks up when I try to install the usb card. I never actually get to the point where it couold lock up installing the burner.
I do have four i think isa slots, and two pci. I guess PCI was the "bomb" when this computer was new! (hehe)
uh hummm anyway....
I don't have irq conflicts that I'm aware of, and am using only one isa slot for a c/l modem. The other pci slot is using a c/l live x-gamer.
Anyway, I mailed the manu of the card, and they told me that my problem was definitely an "issue..." and I needed to move the card to the other pci slot. Then my problem would be solved!...
Well, no such luck for beanie-boy today!
Thanks again, maybe I'll just throw in the towel on thisa one!
Take care....
