Can I ask you guys in the States if you pay local call rates whilst you're on the net, or are your local calls free?

We pay a monthly rate for phone service and local calls are free. Long distance is, of course, extra.

Here you have 3 choices for local calls (new jersey)
Theres 20 calls, 75 calls and unlimited, each within a dollar or 2 within each other.

Unlimited is 8.19 USD a month here (the most in my county), so no reason you shouldnt spring the extra 3 bucks for unlimited local calls

This is one place where USA rocks...
That and relatively low sales tax (like 6% here..I went to canada and it was ALOT more)

Uh yeah....

Y Cymro I presume your trying to fuel the no charge for locals protest that started in UK recently,
so this may be of use

RSA monthly charge no charge on locals no matter how long, Charge only on tolls

NZ locals free, tolls charged, IT calls free but they keep trying to introduce 2c per minute charge.

Australia to best knowledge locals are free at least they were the last time I was there, but charge on tolls.

I hope this helps with the campaine to rid BT of their local charge policy. If thats what you are after. /forum/smile.gif

sales tax in my provice is 7%. But Alberta doesn't have the 7% GST that the rest of the provinces have. I think the average (gst included) is about 14%. Ouch. Not to mention that our income tax is a lot higher.

And speaking of Long distance charges....check out http://www.dialpad.com

It's a free in US long distance java thingamajig, no downloads, no charges. Not sure about the sound quality though....wouldn't want to use it for important calls.

Wow. High tax in Canada. That makes me feel a little better about my tax here in California. Which is 8.5% in my county.

Hmmmm let's see....
23%-40% on income (including share profits and bank interest)
17.5% on goods and services (including the phone bill)
17.5% on fuel and electricity (hmmm could be 8%, still sucks /forum/frown.gif)
40%+ on alcohol, tobacco and petrol
and between £500-£1500 per year per household for local services (trash, police, education, etc)

I love the UK

PS I heard today that BT are cutting internet call rates AND allowing contractors access to the local loop to install DSL etc. We shall wait and see.....

I thought it was bad at 12.5% when I was living there, how come you all haven't found sunny climes that are cheaper yet?. mind you we still have 12.5% GST down under, and USA doesn't want imports these days seems they have to many getting in illegal.

just to make a point the tax on fuel here in the UK is actually so high i cant calculate it as a percentage, but for £10 of fuel(petrol/diesel) over £8.50 is tax, and that is a fact by the AA and the RAC.....

but we do get relatively cheap AMD K6-2 chips......and a nice low temperature all year round, makes for good overclocking /forum/biggrin.gif
