When I am at A:\> and I type format c:/s I get Bad command of file name error?

Thanks I have already read that information. Could there be any software installed on the laptop that would prevent me form formating the hard drive?

Bad command of file name error usually means
the file is not on the disk.
check to see if the format.com is on the disk.

Did you put a space between the C: and /s? it should look like this: format C: /s

Is it really necessary to use the /s? I mean it's going to be blank anyway so what is the need to tell it to leave room for an OS?

The /s switch copies the OS files to the disk after formatting and makes it bootable. I suppose there are scenarios where one would want to be able to boot directly to a C:\> prompt without using a startup floppy, although I can't think of any at the moment... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

There are several switches that can be used with the Windows setup to make the installation go faster:
/IS skips the scan disk
/IW skips the license screen
/IE skips the startup disk creation
/IV makes the billboards go away

(edit) = you would have fell on the floor laughing if you saw the spellig error.
