If you want better performance get a faster spinning HDD(7200rpm or more). Even with a UDMA100 board and HDD you won't get sustained 100MB/sec performance. If you get a faster drive set it as primary master and the old drive as secondary master. There are ghosting progs to clone from your old to new HDD.

What does your motherboard support?

If it only has DMA33 support it won't make a difference what you set them as.

If your BIOS has the option, you can tell the BIOS what hard drive to boot from. My ASUS P3B-F has that option in the "boot" setting part of the BIOS.

I wouldnt' bother with a ATA100 HD yet, most HD's out on the market can not sustain that type of bus speed. You may get a rare burst but that's about it.
I have an ATA66 7200 RPM and that does wonderful for me.
But as Marcus mentioned your mobo MUST support these (ATA100 etc.) or it's a complete waste of money your HD may work but it will work as ATA33 and not above.
