problem booting a new install of W98SE?

this is first time, that iv worked on a gateway,

are they all this SLOW & BUGGY!?

-complaint was W 98 SE frooze on startup logo

-its a gateway G6-300,
thats pent 11,64mg ram,maxtor 8390 mg HD,

-i couldt use format from DOS floopy, as kept stopping after 2% saying "ran
outa memory"

-when i type command FORMAT C:?S, it frooze

-so i used Ontracks- disk manager to format

-then i booted from floopy to start W98 SE setup-instal-....

this took FOREVER 3 HOURS!!!!!!! ,as froze & had repeat install a second
time,

-after finally got hardware,PnP recognized etc,it again offers choice,
boot from HD
or boot from CDROM

if i choose boot from HD,get error " I/O error, replace disk
-if choose boot from CDROM( thats with floopy W98 boot inserted) it opens
ok,what went wrong, why will not boot from HD no sys files on HD ? then how
come it installed W98SE after checked HD for instal?
