Exactly, as UC put it. Shut everything off, and run it again.

If you have a few bucks (pounds) to spare get Norton System Works and use these utilities to keep your computer healthy. They're alot faster than defrag or scandic and correct problems you don't even know about. Have it running on ALL my computers. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

You might want to take a "boo" at this.

I am using Windows 98 V1.0 and I have tried to defrag my C drive and without success. I have had defrag running, but the problem is that it gets to about 10% of completing and then for some reason restarts itself. I watched it for a while to see what was happening and and I saw it flash up the message "Drives contents have changed - restarting".

Please can anyone tell me why this should be happening and what I can do to stop it and complete the defragging process?

Help much appreciated.

Thanks

Jas

You have some program running in the background, possibly even your screensaver.
Make sure the screensaver is set to come on after a very long while or turn it off prior to defrag. Go to Accessories, System Tools, System Information, Software, Running Tasks to see what is running before you start. Try to get that to a minimum with the task manager (ctrl/alt/delete) or by elimination of startup items and rebooting.
Then defrag.
