Yes, you will need a chip-puller. It kinda looks like a tweezer with the ends bent in to get a better grip on the chip. You can buy one at Radio Shack. Or you can use a flat head screw driver for removal of the BIOS chip. Carefully slide it into one end of the chip and press down towards the mainboard little by little at each end of the chip. But make sure to do very little at a time. If you do too much at one end, the BIOS pins will get bent or maybe even broken.

But the best thing that I would suggest is for you to get a chip puller at an electronic store. I don't want you to end up ruining your BIOS chip. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Here's a little trick I use all the time. Take one of the many expansion slot covers (you know, the metal things that you have to rip out to add new cards) that you have laying around, cut it in half length-wise, then bend about 1 cm of the end over. It works great. But you might have to start it with a small knife, first. Some chips are directly against their sockets and you can't get the metal stip under there.
But once you do get it under, just rock the thing side to side and the chip will life right out of there. If you do it right, the chip should slide out, bit by bit, one side at a time. So there's no bent pins. I've removed the BIOS chip from my server about 4 times now with no ill effects.

Luser,

It sounds like you have a chip with pins down each side (rectangular). Shwei said he (she?) has a PLCC chip which is a SQUARE chip with contacts on all sides. I've heard of people using a bent paperclip to remove these chips but I really reccomend a puller. I've never had success with a paperclip myself.
