Well, it turns out that I am having random freeze-ups in relation to the cd drive. I got windows 98 to work again but it is still giving me this problem. this has happened before and it just went away over time, but the problem seems worse this time.

is there any way to get rid of it for good?

If the drive is not by itself on either IDE1 or IDE2, then you can try doing that.

I've got a CD drive that doesn't like to share at all.

Have you tried cleaning it?
