Being the good son that I am, im going to take one of the 32 mb sticks out of my computer (which leaves me with 192) and stick it into my dads to bump his up to 64, cause he will prob get more of a boost with it than I will miss without it. my question is, How should I arrange the remaining memory I have? Should I stick the big whopper (the 128) in slot one and the 2 32's right after it, or does it not make a bit of difference? thanks!
While IM here, what do you suggest for the size of my virtual memory file now that I have lowered my memory?

I ask this same question awhile back and was told that it would not matter...preference was to put the bigger first to smaller but either way would not make a difference....I tried it eveyway possible and my system benchmarked the same no matter how they were in there and thats with 512mb

I don't think placement matters with DIMMs. Oh, Pentium II/Celeron/PIIIs all perform best at 128mb Ram, because anything over or under this slows them down because of the **** memory bus offered by the PII type chips. /forum/smile.gif

Thanks alpha
I new there was a reason that to much memory would slow a system down. I just can't remeber where I came across it, at least now some one has confirmed it.

Hmmmm....don't think it makes any difference what size sticks you put in,however, what slot does.My 6VBA mobo says to start at slot #4,not #1....Try 2-2.5x for your virtual memory.
Welsh Wizard...I think the excess ram problem was with Windows 3.1 and 95A,because of the 16 bit architecture.
alpha...Isn't a P3 memory bus higher than a P-2?

running 95 with 512 mb of ram on a p3500 does not seem to slow it down...I find it to run much smoother with games...it benches higher and over all performance is hard to beat...I can burn audio as well as data cd's while surfing or downloading and often have 10 to 15 windows open at a time and I have not had a crash or a cold start in a very very long time....I dont think I would be able to accomplish that with 128 mb of ram...I'm not saying what you have said to be untrue but with this system at least I find more memory to be a positive and not a negative...I have run with 64...128...192....256...320...and now 512 and this seems to be the magic nimber...I bought a bunch of memory when it was dirt cheap and so why nor use it....this thing flies......its only running at 515....
I still have 32 left but no place to stuff it or I would....I must say that going to 95 was also a plus....
how many of you out there would NOT add more memory if it was there for you to do so ??

Ok..let me clear this up a little bit(chipbgt-gettin' off the subject a little bit). For most new systems,128mb of SDRAM is just fine. For instance, there's very little difference playing Quake 3 with 128 or 256 ram. If,thats all your running(no programs on hold).Codybear has so much ram, that it's acting as a "Ram Hard Drive"(wish I had that much Ram!).So,his 'puter rarely has to go to the hard drive......If your using large file/heavy graphics apps(ie.Photoshop),then 256mb ram is needed unless you have a superfast HD and that will cost you more than another stick of Ram......DawgTuff.

my soyo manual says first chip in slot 3, next in 2, next in 1 and sizes can be mixed.

On older 486 and earlier it was smaller to larger(ie...4MB 16MB 32MB and the increments were specified you could only use certain sizes in certain banks. On newer boards I think it is governed by the RAS line share architecture I think this applies to boards where there are SIMM's and DIMM's but the RAS, (Random Access Strobe) is configured to only access certain sets of memory banks together these are the possible configurations for my soyo :
SIMM bank 0 yesno yes no no no yes no
SIMM bank 1 no yes yes no no no no yes
DIMM slot 1 no no no yes no yes no yes
DIMM slot 2 no no no no yes yes yes no
if this is not correct please feel free to offer the correct answer.

LW lost me, but heres something intresting..
In my ABit BH6 manual, it says populate in any order
In my Soyo SY-6BA+III, it says fill one first, 4 last
In my Soyo SY-6VBA 133, it says fill slot 4 first, and 1 last.
Ill hafta go with Abit on this one, cuz if Soyo cant make up thier minds, I doubt it matters.
