cannot load new op sys to hd, keep getting message errors that the hd is bad. cannot fdisk hd, doesn't complete. new hd out of box. took hd to other puter and fdisked, formatted, and loaded windows. took hd to other puter and its recognized, works, but will not shut down. any ideas

Unless the two systems are identical, it is likely you will have more problems than just that. The motherboard drivers and other hardware drivers cause conflicts when a hdd is moved from one system to another. On the old hdd try to format the master boot record via DOS:
c:\format /mbr

To prevent the hardware driver conflicts that Daveleau is talking about, you can do the following:
• Boot into safe mode
• Go to Device Manager
• Remove all of the hardware shown (this can take a while, since you have to click the Remove button for each driver and wait for it to be removed). If Windows asks you to restart, don't do it until you're finished.
• Reboot and let Windows install the drivers you need.
After you do this if you still have the shutdown problem (and are using Win98), you might need to download the Win98 shutdown supplement from Microsoft.
