You have too many USB devices. While USB is supposed to be the end all for attaching peripherals, it has a 12MB bandwith limitation. Your Handspring will begin and as it eats up bandwith it will interfere with your other USB devices' bandwith and cause them all to cease working. If you have USB speakers, a digicam or other hogs (printer as well), you need to disconnect them to sync and then reconnect them after syncing. I had the same problem when I had a set of USB speakers, a USB Zip and a USB digital web-cam all on the same USB channels via a hub. Doesn';t matter if it is powered or not. Another fix is to get another USB add-in card and insert it into a PCI slot. It will take anothe IRQ but it will double your bandwith (12MB on each set of 2 connections.
