Does anyone know if Napster is safe for MP3s?
Thanks!

I heard them talking about it on the ScreenSavers (ZDTV) and they seemed to like it, but I've never used it so I wouldn't know from experience.

I just started using it a few day ago. It's pretty cool. Seems to be safe, but what do I know? I've asked the same question and have had quite a few people tell me yeah it's safe.

It's real easy to setup and run. If you think anything suspitious is going on, just quit. Only tip I'd give you is when you set it up, it'll ask you if you want it to scan your HD for mp3 directories. Tell it no. Then in preferences you can indicate your mp3 directory.

Then that directory will be the only one visible to others, and only mp3 files in that directory.

And just in case you don't know, another huge resource of mp3 files (plus you don't have to worry about security) is the newsgroups. Much faster too. Check groups like:

alt.binaries.sounds.mp3
alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.*

This is something that I also have questions about, unfortunately any answers seem to be scarce. At least, I haven't found out much.

We know the files are uploaded from our harddrives, which means at least this part of our hdd is remotely accessible. My BlackIce Defender goes crazy when I hook up. A proxy configuration automatically reverts to the DHCP server, which doesn't allow a download. Not much about security has been revealed at Napster's site. A small reference in an old Wired.

If anyone comes across any info, I'd like to see it.
