Safe mode won't always work???

My computer has me press the "ctrl" upon booting up to enter safe mode. Sometimes it works sometimes it won't? WHY?

You generally have to press the Ctrl key right as the Starting Windows message comes up. Another method is to use the F8 key.

I think you have to have it pressed down BEFORE the "Starting Windows 98" message appears.
