I've heard that the IBM GXP series is great and wonderful and unbeatable but I want to know if there any other good (non scsi) hard drives...
Please enlighten me on this topic.

As far as what is a good brand, I've found Seagates to be pretty good. Never had any major problems with em.

Ream..
My apologies for locking your thread in Steals 'n Deals. Though 'Steals' wasn't the correct forum to post this question and multiple posts are discouraged, my locking yours wasn't meant to be an example, since there are other posts there off topic also. This is my error, and I posted in Steals 'n Deals so there won't be further confusion.
Anyway, I have an IBM 22GXP 66/7200 and I love it. I've previously owned only two Western Digitals, so not alot to compare. My backup drive is a WD 13G 66/5400 drive, and it's a good drive, but the 7200rpm is a much faster, better performer, and the IBM is much quieter even at the faster rpm.
Also, you may want to take a look at SysOpt's UserReviews (http://www.sysopt.com/userreviews/index.html) to see what other users say about different brands and models. /forum/smile.gif

I've had great success with Quantum. Wouldn't try another. /forum/smile.gif

I've used Maxtor all along until I saw some posts here that they may not o/c well. I have a WD now along with several Maxtors. I've since seen several posts indicating no problems o/cing Maxtors (within limits)
The only problem I've ever had was some bad clusters do to an incompetent packer/shipper.
There's a REASON 'puters and cases are packed the way they are from the factory...

I like the ones that work. /forum/wink.gif I've seen failures from most of the major brands, more WDs and Maxtor problems, but also more of those drives have been in the systems I've looked at, so I wouldn't be predisposed against either brand. IBM is the one major brand I haven't had experience with and the one that gets the most praise it seems. The new Western Digital drives should be quite comparable in quality though.

I work at a computer store, so I have handled alot of Hard Drives. I swear by IBM drives, out of 450-500 drives, I have had 2 bad ones, that is the best record I have ever seen. Western Digitals are the worst, followed by Maxtor and Quantum. Seagates are really good too, but mainly their SCSI line, I haven't heard much for their IDE drives though. Also Fujitsu Drives are excellent drives also...their new models have UATA 66, 7200RPM, AND 2 Meg Cache buffer! They are speedy little drives.

Almost all HDD that is sold here are from Seagate. Seagate pretty good, but not so compared to Quantum, and Maxtor and IBM too. But they say Seagate's pretty good, of course that's the only brand name w/ support here.
I own an old Quantum 500MB. It's still running, 18 hrs a day for I don't know for how long... It came w/ my 486 or 386, can't remember. Definitely it didn't came w/ my 286AT. Anyway, I had no problems, I use it now in my old P54 166 + Yakumo VX 66mhz along w/ my old 1.7GB. My Quantum 80Mb is still running, 18 hrs a day too in my 286 that I let my helpers use of organization purposes. In my PC junkroom, I have a junk 1.7GB Seagate, 4.3GB Seagate, 2 HDD's 1.2GB Seagate, 2GB SCSI Seagate, and of course some old soundcards and video cards and mbs.
Ok... Laugh at my 286, 386, and 486. It still runs, but they have their own simple tasks, such as simple computation and small databases such as Quattro Pro(very old version). Still works, but not through 2K I guess. Actually, these PC's I use for testing--for the y2k. Of course, they are in a diff. network.
