I got this message a few weeks ago when I started up Internet Explorer 5.0 saying there was an upgrade available for 5.5. Stupid me...I downloaded it and tried installing it. Now, a few weeks later, and almost 2 DOZEN attempts at installing it properly, I can't get it to work. I've tried repairing it using the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, but it says that the installation was never finished. I've tried removing it and restoring the previous version, but it says the file c:\program files\internet explorer\setup\setup.stf doesn't exist. Anyone have any ideas as to how to either get it to install properly, or get it out of my system? It's really ticking (yeah right!) me off.

Learn your lesson? The solution isn't simple. Go to & carefully study the stuff @ this site:

The program IE Eradicator (just .inf files) will remove IE5 (not 100% sure 'bout IE5.5). But make sure you understand what you're doing. If not, get someone knowledgable to assist you.

I had no problems installing 5.5 (Quite accidentally actually. I was downloading it to stick on a CD for my brother and hit the wrong button the first time around. Stupid thing wouldn't let me cancel...), but I have found it to be far less stable than 5.0. It's given me more errors in the past week than 5.0 ever did. If it gives me just one more error, out it goes...

Get a application called GoBack. Then when you have a screw up like that all you have to do is roll back to a time before the "problem" and you are golden. It has saved my rear a number of times.

Problems with a new Microsoft product -

WHAT A SHOCK -

Sorry - my sarcastic bone was acting up - As a rule - I don't load new MS code until the first service pack is out.... Let 6 million OTHER users beta-test for MS....

Thanks BFlurie. IEradicator seemed to do the trick. I was worried that it deleted the My Documents folder and that I had just missed it in the info file, but thankfully it was there. The only problem I seemed to come across when reinstalling IE5.5 (cuz I couldn't find the installation for 5.0 again) was that it couldn't find the ShowDesktop.sfc file. There was another .sfc file it couldn't find, but I can't remember the name of it - and it was something I didn't want anyway. Everything seems to be working fine though...the installation itself took awhile (Microsoft server and all) but it did finish installing this time.
Again, thanks for your help.

DaHaze, you can make that file. Make a new, blank text file & copy the following on it:

[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop

Name it ShowDesktop.sfc
Careful w/Notepad, it wants to always put the extension .txt on files it saves. I THINK it goes in this folder:
c:\windows\application data\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch
