This one I find to be a real interesting one. Installed a new Abit SE6 MB into my machine yesterday. Had to fight just a bit to get the new board drivers on, but the machine works fine, with the exception of Win98 telling me of an Unknown Device on boot. It won't tell me what kind of device, can't seem to find the appropriate driver for it anywhere (Win98cd, MB driverCD). The real kick, is that when I check out the device manager, there is no Unknown Device listed what so ever. No double listings, no "!", nor "?" by anything. Even after several reboots, and full power-downs, this thing thinks there is something that needs a driver, but everything looks normal.

Anyone seen this one before?

Try in device manager opening up LPT and see if it is your printer.

Checked out the printer, and that wasn't it... everything in the device manager is acting like normal, no flags what so ever. I even when and removed the printer/lpt1, and rebooted. still same thing; unknown on boot.

Just a thought. Try start/run/put in *msconfig* -no quotes-and see what is loading at startup.Un check anything you don't recognize, any file *.exe*,and see if that stops it.

Make a checklist of all the component/cards in your machine, then use a process of elimination to find out what wasn't installed.

There has to be something in your machine that isn't running, List specs...

at present, my machine consists of:

Abit SE6 MB
WD 20.4GB HD
192MB SDRAM
SoundBlaster Live Value
P3 650MHz FC-PGA
3Com 905 NIC
LeadTech WinFast 32MB AGP
2 CD-ROM's, 1 Acer, 1 LG, both 32X

I tried checking thru the start up in msconfig, but all that really happened was that I freed up some resources.

As far as the process of elimination, should I be checking for the non-installed stuff in the control panel/add-remove progs area?
