I installed and then uninstalled windows media player after which my system started hanging on shutdown. I reinstalled media player with no improvement.I fished around and in systems it says my advanced power management support either isn't working ,no drivers or drivers not properly installed ( code 10). How do i fix this? I ran windows 98 se ( upgrade from 95)without any probs before this. Help much appreciated.

Thanks for the link. However their recommendations didn't fix it. In fact on rebooting I got a blue screen error saying there was stacking of my Vxd drivers ie too many devices were using them and that I should uninstall some devices. the only new device I installed was media player. What do I do now, Reload windows? if so just uninstall win 98 then reload or also reload win 95?

Look on your W98 CD for the generic W98 Resource Kit. It has some good info about Power Management problems. You've installed the W98SE shutdown patch, I assume?
LOOK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Don't think so. Go to this Microshaft site; it should identify your OS. I wouldn't install any updates unless you KNOW you need 'em (like the shutdown update):

I installed the shutdown patch witnout any success. Someone in our IT dept told me that Norton antivirus 2000 scan at shutdown may be interfering with proper shutdown. I'm going to deselect this otion but I'm gettting really frustrated. Anymore bright ideas guys?

Sorry it's been a while but let me tell you how I got on. I installed the shutdown patch without any change.I disabled norton's virus scan at shutdown without results. I then used alt-ctrl-del and startd closing the apps except explorer and systray but before I could finish my system froze and I had to restart it. After which my display was messed up, but my system now shuts down properly. I had my display drivers reloaded succesfully and I also had to reinstall Norton. Also when I boot up it gives me the options screen ( ie normal, safe etc but boots into normal by default ). I'm probably going to have to reload windows at some stage but I'll wait till my next major problem. Thanks for your help guys.

To bypass the options screen, go to Start/ Run, type Msconfig. On the General page, hit Advanced. Make sure "Enable Startup Menu" is UNCHECKED.
