I recently had to buy a new motherboard for my computer because of technical problems (Diet pepsi). Anyways, i've managed to get everything working now except the mouse, i've tried 3 diffrent ones, the cable is connected to the motherboard just fine, and i've tried it in com1 and 2. Windows cant detect it no matter what i do, its a standard serial mouse. Im clueless to why its doing this. Anyone got a suggestion?

make sure your serial ports are turned on in the bios. have you tried a ps/2 mouse?

Ya, i have both serial ports enabled in BIOS, and the motherboard doesnt have a place to put a PS/2. I've tried bout everything, this looks hopeless =(

About all I can think of is maybe the cable is reversed on the motherboard? Maybe you already tried that since you said the "cable is connected to the motherboard just fine." Just my $.02.

Nope, its not reversed, its got a groove in the place you slide it in, so you cant reverse it.

OK, how about bent pin(s) on the motherboard or the 9-pin serial connector?

I had a problem loading my Logitech mouse and all I did was remove the extra mice located in regedit under the KEY:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Class\Mouse
Leave the main key but remove all sub keys. You might want to export a key backup first of the main Mouse KEY first. Try it out. If it has undisirable effects you can just double click the backup.reg you made and all is well. As well as it was anyways.

Welp, i talked to a friend. He said that it sounds like the com1 and 2 chipsets on the motherboard are fried =( I tested his theory by connecting the 2 and 3 pins on the serial connector for port 1 while running Hyperterminal. Sure enough no echo appeared on the screen (Pin 2 sends out while pin 3 recieves). Guess i gotta buy yet another motherboard =()

Had the exact same problem w/a mobo some time ago. Simply would not detect it -- either on the PS2 port or either Com port. The same mouse worked perfectly as either PS2 or Serial in my other box. Trying to work w/o a mouse 'taint easy, is it? Might try flashing the most recent BIOS version for your mobo, and/or "wiping" your mobo's BIOS (jumper setting) per your mobo's instructions to try a fresh start.

goto download.com and get the com port tester
it will tell you if you have a problem with your ports. I had the same problem and found out that i had to get a kensington usb mouse!

The first time I built a computer, I had to go through 3 PS/2 cables between the motherboard and the case before the system finally saw the mouse.

One thing you can try - and I only rarely recommend this - is to take a pair of needle-nose and simply grip the motherboard PS/2 connector pins firmly. Don't pull or anything, just clamp down on the pins one at a time. This will very slightly deform the pins - And that is sometimes enough to make the connection between the pin and the connector. Can you tell I use used parts?
