Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : HD failing or user error
I have 6 workstations within our department that have a directory
"dir00001". Three of the machines had a problem hanging within windows
explorer. It looks like the directory is empty on one of the machine, but
when trying to delete the folder it comes up saying that it contains a
system file named 55555555.555 and can not delete it. Also unable to delete
it from DOS or safe mode command prompt only. All of the machines are runing
windows 95.
Is this a virus, HD start to fail or just a matter of machines not getting properly shutdown?
Thanks for your help.

It is not a virus, nor a sign of HD failure. I don't think it has anything about shutdown, but I don't know exactly how to test this.
Anyway, I have noticed this directory (or lack thereof) in many Win95/98 clients. I attribute this to a winders anomaly. I have not noticed any problems with the existence/nonexistence of this directory. Though I'm curious as to why they exist (defrag?).

This link tells how to install a second copy of Microsoft Windows 95 to a new folder on your computer for troubleshooting problems.
Granted it's for a specific office prog, it may assist in what you seek.

The Windows 95/98 Setup program creates a file called Msdos.sys in the root folder and sets the file's Read-Only, System, and Hidden attributes. Unlike the Msdos.sys file in MS-DOS, this file is a text file. It contains a [Paths] section..->> http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q118/5/79.asp
hopefully something there will give you a clue as to what's up.

You can delete 'em. Go to Start/ Run & then "Restart in MSDOS". Once there, type:
Set dircmd=/w/o/a/p
so all files will show. Now navigate to where these folders are -- hopefully they'll show. Type:
Deltree /y foldername
where foldername is the exact name. Use the same command for any other folders or even files you wish to delete. If you couldn't see them, try rebooting, pressing F8 when necessary to get the boot menu & choosing safe DOS mode. Then try the same procedure.

If you havent already done so, goto Start > Settings > Folder Options > View > Files & Folders > Show All Files.
This will not solve your problem directly, but you should be able to see what's in that "empty" folder.

The dir0001 files are log files for the registry. You may need to do a clean 95 install if the registry is corrupted.
