ok, since upgrading my MoBo, I have encountered so many problems. The old Mobo had onboard sound and graphics so when I upgraded I needed a new sound card and graphics card too.

On restart everything boots up fine and most windows programs run fine as does the modem. However the sound now seems decidedly quiet and needs the volume level considerably higher than before and games will crash repeatedly after about 60s when I play in Glide or Direct 3D modes. All games run fine in software modes but the system freezes when I try to play using any 3D modes. Sound card and Graphics card are using the same IRQ at the moment but I'm sure they crashed even when they used seperate IRQ's. I have all the latest drivers and bios updates and have even formated and re-installed win 98.

Also having just purchased a Sony R-RW CD ROM drive a get a blue screen error something to do with VXD? whenever I try to copy anything to a blank disk. And when carrying out a packet format the same error occurs when the format is 12:40s away from completion.

I have a Giga-byte GX-BA2000 MoBo, a Creative Soundblaster Live Value! sound card and a Voodoo3 3000 AGP graphics card. I am also running a P3 450MHZ not overclocked.

Are there any incompatibility problems? Is it an overheating prob with the Voodoo? Any help greatly appreciated!

thanks.

did you do a clean install of windows when you changed mobo's ? if not back up every thing you can, forget about the stuff you cant and do a complete reinstall, as in format the hard drive and start from scratch.

there are all the old drivers, files, reg. intry's, etc etc, that are couseing you the problems and thats about the best way to get it all cleaned up /forum/smile.gif

First move the sound card out of the PCI slot next to the AGP slot (if it is there - I bet it is there isn't it?), leave that PCI slot empty. Next, make double sure that you have installed any chipset patches for that motherboard; there should be NO yellow exclaimation mark, question mark, or IRQ conflict in the device manager. The graphics card should not share an IRQ.

As for your "Sony R-RW CD ROM," it could be just a conflict of resources, or incorrect disk controler drivers - did you check for an update on those too? I guess you have already tried the drive in various master/slave configurations?

Ok thanks guys. I have tried a hard disk format and a complete re-install from scratch for win 98 but it didn't help. I am about to try again though.

The Sound card used to be in the slot adjacent to the AGP card but that was also moved when I formated, it is now 4 PCI slots away and at the far end of the MoBo so I think we can rule that out. As for chipset patches,I'll check the web for any updates. I am a bit of a dunce when it comes to this sort of stuff and whilst I had heard of Bios updates this is the first I've heard of chipset patches! As for the conflicts and IRQ issue It's easier to just show you this info from 'system information'. There are a number of IRQ conflicts but as only 9 is free, surely some have to share. Which can I do without and how the heck do I change them! I haven't a clue!

[Hardware Resources]

[Conflicts/Sharing]

Finally the CR-Rom issue. I am using the recomended set up ie my hard disk is IDE1 master with Slave not used and My Qauntum CD-Rom is using IDE2 master with the Sony R-RW using the slave. Does having both of these on the same IDE cause chaos?

Sorry about the length of this but it is driving me crazy and I would love to sort it out.

Regards.

Lancelot.
