In my divice manager list I have two listings of "PCI mass storage controller" under OTHER DEVICES with big yellow ?s by them. What is PCI mass storage controler? do I need this or can I delete it off.
And, what is "IRQ holder for PCI steering"?
this is listed in IRQ allocation table.
thanks

There are a few things it could be -
1) a SCSI card
2) an added IDE port card
3) an IDE RAID card
4) a PCI smart RAM card a.k.a. a hard-card
5) an IDE 33/66 port card
that about covers it.... Chances are it's a SCSI card the system can't readily identify and wants a driver update for. Or - you paid someone else to add an ATA66 hard drive to your system and your motherboard didn't have an ATA port - so they added a PCI card to make up for it.
The reference to PCI steering and IRQ - don't touch it - that's correct. You'll see that IRQ used 2 or 3 times and that's normal and doesn't represent a conflict for PCI. That's a PCI bus which gets info from the CPU to the PCI cards.

thanks Axel for your reply. I assume it will be ok to delete the PCI mass storage controller?

I had the same listing on the new ABIT KA7-100 mb....
when I installed the drivers it turned into the controler for the additional 2 ide ports...
hope this helps

Well, sounds like you have an Abit Mobo alright...
I recently upgraded to a new Abit Mobo, and this device also appeared in the system properties.
You`ll find that on your Mobo, there are 4 IDE connectors. You can install 2 devices for each one. I think that IDE 3 and 4 are supposed to have HD`s on though. I had a floppy with the drivers for the new device that gets`s listed. If you don`t have the drivers, head over to the Abit site, and download the drivers. Also, there are BIOS updates there too......
