How to copy audio cassettes to computer and then burn a cd???

I asked the local soundtrack store and they had no idea. I just replaced the tape deck in the car with a cd player. Here is what I need to do:

Copy older cassette tape music from a tape deck in the home stereo, through my computer as a wave(?) file and then burn a cd. (I have the cd burner).

The tapes I want to copy are legitimate recordings and would not be hampered by copy right laws. (Most are old Grateful Dead boot leg tapes from various shows) I would like to keep these more for nostagia. The sound on some is not too great anyway.

Do I need special software? (OS is win98se).
Special sound card? One machine has a video capture card, my other machine the cd burner. They are networked.

Everyone I have asked indicates they don't know how to do this, nor do they know anyone.

Any tried and true ideas? Suggestions?

Thanks

1 way is to use your sound card software and run the tape deck into the line-in on your sound card. Most cards come with some sort of "audio deck" which includes a wav recorder. I did it once with some Skynerd music I only had on tape - in the "old days" http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Hope this helps

yes, it's the right way. To get best quality you should record the wave files with 172 KB/s. I did it myself from old LPs and because I also have the cdwriter in the second comp I transfered those files..f.e. Winoncd will reformat and burn the wave files into CD-soundtracks..
