Well I got this 8 mb video card Joel is installing, and I have tried to install it before, but it won't work. We put it in, and turn the computer on and the computer boots up normally but the card shows nothing on the screen. It is blank like it isn't even on. My mobo has onboard video, but he says that he tried another card and it disables itself or something. I bought it from another friend and a few monthes earlier we installed it on his computer and it worked fine, he just didn't need it, so I bought it from him. Any ideas on why it isn't working? Any ideas on how to fix it?

You need to go into setup (BIOS) and disable your onboard video. Better yet boot to black screen then move monitor cable to onboard adapter and see your desktop. This should convince you that the onboard card is still operational. Now reboot and get into setup (BIOS), disable the onboard card and on reboot the bios should find the VGA card' bios and you should get display

Ok guys. Update.....
I can't find any jumper on the motherboard or any setting in the bios to disable the onboard video. Could it be that the motherboard automatically turns it off when it sences a video card? Is it possible that the onboard video can't be disabled?
I put an extra Trident 1mb card i had laying around and it worked fine. What does this mean?
Please Help!!
~Joel
Install both of them if you can and then disable the one you don't want in Device Manager. Do that by selecting disable in this hardware profile. Or something similar. I actually found that suggestion on the 3DFX site to help people install Voodoo cards in a situation like yours. You might want to wonder over there to check that I told you correctly. Hope it helps.

Could it be something wrong with the PCI slot the card goes into? I've heard about slots being bad and causing stuff like this.

You probly won,t find anything in the bios to disable the onboard video. That will have to be done in device manager after you install pci card. The info i,m giving you is from my gateway motherboard so it might be different. Go into the bios and look for something on the lines of hardware configuration or periphreal (don,t no correct spelling!)configuration and look for video and and if it says agp try to change it to pci , thats what I had to do .I know you said you did not see anything but check again. Also you can try going to device manager , system devices, pci bus , settings and change setting from the USE HARDWARE setting to the USE BIOS setting and that may enable you to switch from agp to pci . HOPE IT IS OF SOME HELP.

Ok there is this line in the bios that says "onboard agp vga........(agp or pci)
Right now it's set to pci. I'll try disabling the onboard video in the device manager.
Thanks,

Ok now the onboard video doesn't work. But i do see a line in the bios that says "share memory size........disabled". But it won't let me go to this line to change it. What other setting do i need to change in order for me to be able to change that line?

joel, i remember playing around in the bios and sometimes to change some things in it, i think possibly that setting, you had to change another setting above it. example: (i made this up)
Sound Enabled
Video Disabled
Share Memory Size Disabled
and since like the video line is disabled you have to enable that to enable the other. now i totally made up those settings as you can tell, but that is an example of how it would go. Some things being disabled disable all of the stuff that go with it so maybe you disabled one of those things.

did you try going to device manager, system devices , pci bus, settings then change the USE HARDWARE setting to USE BIOS setting.

Most 2D/3D video cards require that you ENABLE the "assign IRQ for vga". My TNT will display a black screen if this is disabled.

I got my computer back from joel today, so if anyone has any ideas of little things i could check, let me know.
Would E-mailing the manufacturer of the BIOS and asking them about the settings in the BIOS and why the onboard is disabled and cannot be re-enabled help? The onboard has been disabled but now the 8mb video card and the onboard both don't work. The settings cannot be changed.
And could it be something with the moniter possibly? The moniter works, but doesn't show anything on the screen when the 8 mb video card is in. The card works, we have proven that, but could it be something like the card can't work with my moniter? Like the moniter doesn't support some setting the card has?

Update-----
I emailed American Megatrends about the BIOS and how the onboard video cannot be enabled in their BIOS. They told me to go email the manufacturer of the motherboard. If you've had a PCchips anything before, you know just how hard that is. Well I can email them, and email them until I am blue in the face, but I will never get an email back. I'm sure they have about 50,000 emails in their inbox from angry customers. Any ideas on how I can get the onboard video back? I don't even care about the new video card anymore. I just want my old onboard video back. If you have any, and when i say any i mean ANY, ideas at all about how to get my onboard video back, or even if you have any, ANY leads on how I could contact somebody who knows a guy who's cousin used to dog-sit for a guy who's company janitor is brothers with a guy who's old college roomate had a job at a grocery store where he met a guy who might know how to fix it, let me know. I am desperate to fix this problem. I need more than the 1 mb of video I have running in my computer right now. Any help will be appreciatedd.
P.S. I already have been to the Pc Chips lottery and looked around there for help, so please dont post something like "oh here is a site with lots of Pc Chips stuff" and give me a link to the PC Chips lottery.
~Thanks.

The first thing that comes to mind is to reset the BIOS. I believe there is also something in the PCChips book about holding the 'End' key down durring power up to reset some settings in the BIOS. If that doesn't work, then you will have to use the reset jumper. Be sure to leave it in the reset position for several minutes, then return the jumper to there normal setting prior to boot. Then you may have to boot to safe mode if you disabled the onboard video in device manager, so that you can uncheck the disable box. But once you reset the BIOS, you should at least get the post screen.
