I'm building a computer. I want to install win 98. I have lost my boot disk that came with my win 98 disk.I tried using a win 98 start up disk but is does not have the option to install operating system. The options are start computer with cd rom help, start computer without cd rom help and help files. The boot disk that came with win 98 had options begin installing operating system, star computer with cd rom help, and start computer without cd rom help. Thanks for any help you can give me Billy

Hi BILLY,

The installation procedure is a piece of cake. In details:

1. Boot from floppy choosing "Boot without CD-ROM support"
2. type "fdisk" and then create the partitions. Here I assume you know how to use fdisk, if not let us know.
3. Exit fdisk and reboot from floppy choosing "Boot with CD-ROM supprt" this time.
4. type "format c: /s" from A:\>
5. Copy the directory win98 on the CD-ROM to your HD. I do it using an old DOS version of Norton Commander. Use any program you like (eg PC TOOLS) but be carefull to copy all the sub-directories in the win98 folder.
6. Reboot from your HD.
7. Type "cd win98" and then "setup"
8. I think you know the rest http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

If you still have any question just ask

If I may elaborate just a bit on mourikise's suggestion. It was right on track with everything, but I take one additional step. When you set up partitions, create a small (~400MB) second partition. After you format the c:\ partition the way mourikise said, format the second partition without the /s switch (A:\>format d: ) then copy win98 to that partition and run "setup" from there after you reboot. That way, if you ever have to reformat your c:\ partition, you can just run setup again without having to do all the copying.
