I'll assume you have the drivers for the CDROM.

Go into Control Panel, Add new Hardware and add the CDROM. Hint, don't let winders search for new hardware, choose it from the list or Have Disk.

Boot to safe mode and remove all instances of cdroms from device manager - reboot and 98 should pick up the drive.

qball,
I'll try installing it myself, manually, as suggested.

grunt,
Tried that. Didn't work. I was getting the device listed in Device Manager, but it was nowhere to be seen in Explore.

goomer,
I didn't reinstall 98. Why?

if it's in the device manager and working fine, no yellow !'s or anything, and it not showing up in explorer, trying going up the directory tree and then back down. on my machine, often explorer only shows my c: and i have to hit the up button then go back down before all my drives show up.

After replacing my motherboard and processor I found that W98 doesn't see the CD-ROM (though it sees the new aspects to the motherboard). The bios acknowledges it....

Hello All,

Discovered that the controller for IDE2 (the CD-ROM is the master on IDE2) was not operating correctly and removed the driver reference in Device Manager. After bootup everything was fine... until the next bootup, when everything fell apart again. What now?

Are there any "!" in Device Manager for the IDE controllers? If not, check the properties for your 'PCI IDE Controller', under 'Settings' and make sure that both channels are enabled.

You can try this as well. Open up the Windows Registry by running regedit. Search for 'noide' and delete the key if it is found.
