I have a Shuttle SpaceWalker HOT-683 motherboard with a Celron 400 processor. I have a Diamond Viper V550 video card. I added a SoundBlaster PCI512 sound card and now whenever type my computer lockes up. Also, when I'm playing any games using the keyboard or a game pad I lock up. When I lock up my power button no longer works. I have to either use the reset button or the power switch on the power supply. anyone have any ideas?

Sounds very much like an IRQ conflict. You dont mention which OS you ar running, I'm guessing it's win98. Check the IRQ settings in your BIOS.

Sure sounds like a resource conflict. You didn't indicate what OS system you're using, so I'll assume Win 98. Have you checked device manager and system information to determine if there's any IRQ conflict?(particularly between the keyboard and sound card)

If you find a conflict try using the Hardware Conflict Troubleshooter to resolve it. If that doesn't work, remove all your add-in cards, then remove everything but your critical devices fron device manager. Shut down the system & go to your BIOS setup. Make sure PNP operating system is disabled, then reset PNP in BIOS and reboot the system.

Windows should then re-detect all your on-board devices. (make sure you have all your driver disks available) Reinstall your add-in cards one at a time, and hopefully everything will be detected and setup without conflicts.

btw. yes, it is Win 98....the peice of s***. anyways...I've fixed the IRQ and resource conflicts that I could find and it didn't do anything....I removed all the add-in cards and changed the BIOS but I didn't remove all the other stuff. I'll try that too. we'll see what happenes. I am gonna be back at college soon and I'll have all my Computer Science buds come look at it too. I basically tried everything I could think of and am stumped. I even formatted and reinstalled everything. but then again. I installed the cards after everything else was installed. I'll try removing all the stuff outta the device manager and doin that. if there are any other ideas let me know.

in device manager disable the sb16 emulation found in multimedia devices. also disable USB if you are not using it. this will free up irqs...assuming the vid card is an agp card, make sure there is nothing in the slot right next to it...
