My girlfriend bought the same modem as me the Zoltrix Phantom 56k pci. It works fine in my pc but when she took it home it wouldn't recognise it. When trying to connect to the internet the message, modem not found & port already open is displayed. Has anyone got any ideas how to solve this???
That port allready open error can also be caused by the dial up network drivers, unload all of em reboot and then reinstall em and try it agin.Im talking about your tcp/ip and dial up adapter.
Ohh and also boot in safe mode and check for ghost listings of the modem, delete all listings for modems and reboot.

Did you try the same modem on your PC. If it works then, either you are not able to place your modem on the PCI slot properly or the perticular slot is bad, try another PCI slot.

Make sure that all other modems are uninstalled before you install the new one.
If it is a Win modem make sure the system is well above the specs needed to run the modem

I thought port already open could also mean an irq problem or wrong port.

boot into BIOS and disable the onboard com ports, then boot into safe mode and remove the modem drivers as well as the ports from the device mangler and then reboot the system and let it detect the modem. when that modem is installing, it should create a virtual com port to install on and i'm willing to bet that the resources it's wanting to use are in use (although probably not actually being _used_) by an onboard com port. give that a shot. also be sure that when she's trying to connect to the internet there are no communication services running already, especially like a speakerphone app or fax proggy.
cheers!
