Here's an idea I have not tried.
I have observed that cases are always made of heavy guage steel. The component that actually holds the motherboard is a seperate component from the sides that are occasionally constructed to be easily removable. Assuming you don't need the steel sides to support a monitor, why not just leave the sides off the machine entirely?
There is a problem here that contributes to heat and that is dust. A solution to that might be to use the cloth and hardware that stereo speaker manufacturers use to make speaker covers. This way you could have a dust free system with easily removable covers and it would look kind of cool too.
Or you could have your local hot rodder punch some louvres in the side.
I did say I havn't tried this didn't I?
