I use a P2 64 MB SDRAM and win98. After a while when i am browsing the net say a few hours and downloading stuff my system resources start going down till they go to almost 0% and thats when nothing can be done on the pc like even open a window. I have to then reboot, and log on again. Anyone have any ideas. Also i usually have 4 or 5 windows open in ie5 or communicator 4.
Could it be that i have too many windows open. Also when i close the browsers i go up to about 50% memory /resources.
Thanks for any help on the subject.

I noticed the same problem with my comp after I installed a new 128 RAM chip beside the 64 RAM that came with it. It turned out that the 128 was all screwed up. I called the tech support and they sent me a new one which should come today or tomorrow.

adding more memery would help if your openning a lot of stuff

aslo how much free hard drive space do you have if it's less than 200 meg that could be your problem as your running out of virtual memery
you can also try creating your own swap file.

Or you can try downloading and running a memery manager like memturbo or freemem standard freemem standard is freeware memturbo is share ware
they both work preaty good they let you free up memery they are also good for finding hog apps that have memery holes. When you close a app it should free up all or most of the memery it was using some times a program gets a bleed in it and will not free up the memery when you close it
you can also use system moniter in windows to find memery hog programs but it will not let you free up the memery.
hope this helps /forum/smile.gif

Before doing anything to the hardware or buying more RAM, lets do the simple free stuff first.

What-cha-got running?
Open a task list and see what's happening.
is Norton, Fprot, or MacAfee running?
is Seti@home running?
is your screen resolution set really high?
is norton scheduler out there trying to launch all the norton apps?
why do you have so many browsers open at once? - try keeping it down to two screens...
have you cleaned out you start-up menu to only load what you absolutely need?
been a while since you cleaned out all the *.tmp files out there?
been a while since you cleaned out your netscraper cache file and you IE history and temp internet files?
been a while since you did a defrag on the ole hard drive?
been long since you updated those anti-virus definitions and did a sweep of the system?

Try that first, then start in on the hardware and new RAM.

Good advice Axel, you pretty much covered it all. It's amazing how a free simple tune-up/house-cleaning can boost system performance by over 50%! Sometimes to make more room for stuff, we build more closet space rather than organize what we have and get rid of old stuff. (No,not you honey, your shoes...) /forum/wink.gif

Ditto Axel and Toadman. /forum/smile.gif msconfig is a savior to loss of resources, anything on the right hand side of your desktop taskbar is running in background. Go to start then to RUN, type in msconfig, then ok, go to start up tab and see the things you don't need running in background.Things like critical update,ICQ,Yahoo pager, etc. suck resources.....

It would help if you added some RAM. But one major factor, if you're running Win95/98, is free disk space. It uses the free disk space as virtual memory, so must have enough free space. You can eliminate this hassle by changing the setting on how the systems manages virtual memory. You can change it through the Systems in the control panel. You can set your virtual memory to fixed size on the HDD of your chioce, just make sure its the fastest HDD.
