Has anyone found a decent free web host out there? I'm looking for one which provides a fair amount of space, FTP (including ability to set file permissions), and CGI support. I've tried geocities, webjump, domainvalet, tripod in the past and have not had good experiences with any of these.

One more side note, if I have a DSL connection, how easy is it to host a website? Could I hook up an old 486 running apache, buy a domain name, and run it from there?

Thanks,
Zach

Zacko,

MSN is giving out 12megs of free space. You can use FTP but I'm not sure on CGI scripts.

You might look there.

as for hosting your own website Yes you could but if you expect any kind of traffic I would suggest at least a high end pentuim class machine (doesnt have to be a p2 or p3) Check with your DSL supplier on if you have any limitations on bandwith traffic. and costs of getting your own domain ect.

you can always try http://www.freeservers.com
as a start, and use a link that been put on sysopt that allows you to use a prefered site name then links it to your site.

Webjump www.webjump.com (http://www.webjump.com) gives you 25MB, it's fast, has FTP and gives you a cool address:

Xoom also is a good one www.xoom.com (http://www.xoom.com) and it gives good bandwidth and space (don't quite remember how much).

The problem with Xoom is that they have strict policies of what you can and can't put or do in your web page. Read the disclamer or whaterver they show ya. That also goes to other free web space... sometimes is better to read the small letters than suffer later... I tell you this because of an experience with domain registrations that I had.
