I have used the Avermedia TV98 card for over one year with no problems
in my old system. In fact, I
have bragged to my computer buddies about how great it was. Now I have
installed it in a new
computer and I am having problems.
The TV works fine and I can setup the channels on the cable and get a
great picture. The problem is
that the screen locks up including the mouse and keyboard and the only
way out is to turn off the
system. The sound is up to date with real time which sunds fine but
none of the emergency
keystrokes will exit the lockup.
I put together a great system with the following components:
All are new products.
AMD Athlon 700
MSI K7 Pro motherboard
128 Mb PC 100 RAM
ATI Expert 2000 32Mb Rage video card
Sound Blaster Live 128 PCI
Teac floppy
Sony CD ROM
HiVal CD Burner (cheap but works great)

The temp of the CPU is only 105 F. at time of lockup.
Motherboard temp is 95-100F.
I use two case fans, intake and exhaust.

I have changed the screen settings form True color 24 to True color 16
which is what I used before.

The IRQs for the Avermedia list at IRQ 10 which has 4 things on it. The
audio and video Avermedia
takes up two and then the other two are ACPI IRQ holder for PCI IRQ
Steering which also is on another IRQ and the fourth is AMD-756 PCI to
USB Open Host Controller.
I tried to move the Avermedia Items but when I unckecked the auot
settings, it would still not let me move them.

I do not use the USB ports at this time because everything I have is
parallel.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software that came with it three
times and the stuff I downloaded
from your site the other day will not even run the program, it
shutdowns before the program runs.
Am I missing something? Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Chettrick;
You are probably right in assuming that IRQs have something to do with it-- the symptoms are classic. And I have heard good things about every component listed in your system. The card will probably work fine in another high IRQ, like 11 or 12, and you can get it there, though probably not without doing something Physical, rather than only through Windows settings.
You did not list card slot assignments, but I would guess that you have a slot extra; it might be worth trying to take out the avermedia, uninstall any drivers and remove it from your Device Manager, and then reinstall the card into a different slot, this time let Win find it and ask for the drivers.

By putting the card in a different slot, you have changed the automatic IRQ assignment of your BIOS, and so Windows will be tempted into giving it different resources.

I should point out that if you move OTHER cards while doing this, they too will be part of the overall resource "shuffle"; a great game if you are extremely bored and want to reinstall Windows. You also need to check that your BIOS for Plug'N'Play is set for Autoconfigure.

Good Luck, and Have fun!

Thanks for the info, I have a few PCI slots left, so I will try that tonight.

I tried changing around the PCI slot locations and it worked for about ten minutes and then locked up again. I used every PCI slot on he board because my sound card only uses one of the 5. Any more ideas I can try?

You got new IRQ assignments, I would guess. Still doesn't work? And no conflicts listed in Device Manager?

I know this card worked for you in an older system. Was it using the same vidcard as before, and same version OS?

Might try Avermedia, get latest VXDs for card, make sure it is not a driver problem.

Thanks again,
I did download the latest from Avermedia and the darn thing would not even run at all. I did switch from an ATI 2MB video to the ATI 32MB video. Both should be compatible.
If the original message sounded a little strange, it was a copy of what I sent tech support at Avermedia a week ago and they still have not responded back yet.

Chettrick;
If you still have the old vidcard handy, I'd like you to try it and see. I hear a lot about compatibility, but have learned to believe only some of it. Avermedia may love your RAGE chipset, for instance, no problems, but then ATI puts the RAGE chipset on AGP bus and Avermedia card may not have a clue that AGP uses interrupts (few PCI video cards did). So try an older vidcard and see if you still get the lockups.

I finally got the card to work, thanks a bunch.
I did put in the old card and let Windows install the driver and it played fine for a long time. So I put the new card back in, let Windows install their driver again and noticed it was and older version than the one that came with the ATI card. It played full screen for over an hour and I was also multitasking with the internet and Office programs and copying Cds all at the same time wtihout a problem.
My problem could either have been the TV card should have been installed first or the newer driver for the ATI video card had a problem.
I am going to keep pushing it for testing.
Thanks again, Glynn.
